Highlands was in a similar situation earlier this year with Boyle County. At the end of the game Highlands was taking a knee when they had a boat load of time to score. Boyle County down three touchdowns or so had some timeout(s) left and possibly could have gotten the ball back for maybe one more play. They elected not to call the timeout(s) and Highlands continued to take the knee. Had Boyle called a timeout Highlands scores a touchdown. I applaud Boyle's coach for making the right decision.

There is a huge disparity in the programs in my opinion. Highlands is on a whole different level. I have no problem with the onside kick, however when you do it, you do it at your own peril.

Better than punting on third down for sure.

He truly is the only athlete in northern KY who could keep Dion Sanders in check every time he kicks the ball off.

6. Simon Kenton - Just three years ago, the Pioneers played in the state title game and appeared poised to be a new 6A power. The next year, Simon came back with a strong team, but ran into an excellent Saint Xavier in the 3rd round of the playoffs. 2010 started and ended badly. Simon stepped up and played Middletown, Ohio and then finished the year against Ryle. Both games were ugly. The strength of the team should be a big, experienced line and the running of RB Nate Powell, and Jared Bowling, who stars at LB and TE. Simon Kenton should also be strong defensively, with six starters returning. The good news in 2011 is that Simon Kenton will know right away whether they are a contender or a pretender. If Simon Kenton is a true contender, they will handle Saint Xavier in their scrimmage and pummel Beechwood in week two. 7. Saint Xavier - Faced with their toughest schedule ever, the Tigers are also confronted with a massive drop in size and athleticism. Only two starters return on offense, and three on a defense which, in 2010, surrendered the most points in Tiger history. The senior class for this season finished only 4-5 as JV's, including losses to Male (30-7), Manual (14-7), and Ballard (21-15). To make matters worse, there is very little help in the junior and sophomore classes. There is no semblance of Victor Anderson, Deuce Finch, or Lamont McMurray residing on Poplar Level Road. St. X. will have to depend on vast numbers of relatively diminutive and average-speed players, team discipline, and tradition to avoid its first losing season since 1958. For Coach Glaser and his staff, this year (and the next couple) will be their biggest challenge ever. They will need a lot of smoke and mirrors to come away with any victories over teams not named Fern Creek or Doss.

Highlands should probably cancel the scrimmage now.

I'm not sure about the pretender/contender labels. I don't think your freshman football year at Highlands necessarily defines what kind of player you're going to be. It doesn't seem to be that uncommon to see freshman contenders backing up freshman pretenders a couple of years down the road. Good luck to the freshman in 2011.

Whoever is making that comparison is under the influence of something. Not even remotely close.

Some comments from Barton Simmons a writer who has attended the entire week. It looks like both Towles and Pike are doing pretty well. From Wednesday 5. Zeke Pike – Auburn commit Wednesday was an encouraging day for Pike. He’s a quarterback with less experience than a lot of the players out in Malibu but he showed today that he is very coachable. He took what he had learned throughout the week, made the correct reads and was on target. Pike was one of only two quarterbacks to complete all eight of his attempts and he showed that when he’s just reading and reacting, he becomes a much more efficient quarterback. He’s coachable and that’s a great sign for a player with his ability. 7. Patrick Towles – Kentucky commit There were a lot of reasons why Towles really shined in the 7on7 setting. His 7 for 8 performance was impressive in its own right, particularly considering every attempt came from under center where he never plays for his high school team. More impressive though was Towles’ command and approach to the session. He has a leader’s attitude and winner’s demeanor. With good size and arm strength to go with it, Towles could be a major success story for the Wildcats. From Thursday 7. Patrick Towles – Kentucky commit Towles continues to help his stock this week with another impressive showing on Thursday. After making some good decisions and hitting some of his underneath and intermediate targets, Towles drew the defense in and just flicked the ball vertical for a 40+ yard completion and likely touchdown. Along with his physical ability, Towles continues to stand out with his overall leadership and demeanor on the field. He has a quarterback’s presence about him. 9. Zeke Pike – Auburn commit The emphasis from Coach Trent Dilfer all week has been “completions”. He has encouraged making the right reads and taking the check-downs when they’re there. Pike has taken that attitude to heart. He is the only prospect that has completed a perfect 15 for 15 pass attempts. The only reason he is this low from Thursday’s competition is that on an open vertical route, Pike let go a ball that was almost end over end and should have been intercepted only to bounce into his receiver’s hands. That consistency is the only thing keeping Pike from being among the top tier of quarterbacks for Thursday.
