1992 Dream Team vs 2012 Dream Team

I think this old vs. new rivalry is a lot of fun. Reminds me of our fraternity. No point in talking smack to others who don't provide us competition. We talk trash to our own guys who came before and the guys who came after.

That's part of why these guys are what they are. It isn't just their natural talent alone. It's that desire to be the best and to compete.

As for the debate, it is about which team is better. And, IMO, Kobe blinked first. He went from saying they could beat the Dream Team, which could mean he thinks they're better or could mean...that he thinks they could win one in a best-of-seven, which is what he said in the quoted response. Sounds like to me the debate is over. He just admitted that the '92 team was better.

What was he supposed to say when posed w/ the question? "Nah, they'd smoke us?" IF this team can run through their opponents by 25+, then they can be brought in to be compared to '92. I say that b/c the International Game is better overall than it was back in '92. I don't believe that '92 Lithuania or Croatia beat '12 Argentina and Spain. That being said, the '92 team is the reason that basketball took off world wide. That contribution is often understated.

Additionally, until this team wins in convincing fashion, '96 is the 2nd best team, followed by 2008.

Finally, if Jordan can't laugh this off and remember where Kobe is sitting in regards to the media, then he is even closer to beating out Oscar Roberston for another "greatest" title. Greatest Grumpy Ex-Player. Take a page from Larry Bird's book. Admit that the young guys are very talented and appreciate it. Maybe that's why he was a great coach and executive, and Jordan and Magic struggled.

Watching the documentary on the 92 Dream Team reminded me how good they actually were. LeBron and Kobe are All-Time greats and Durrant may be soon, but 92 team was a load. Talk about 92 team being old and past thier prime is wrong too, really only Bird (Due to injuries) was past his prime. Magic was still a very very good player when he was forced to retire...everyone else was just coming into their prime. Jordan, Barkley, Ewing, Robinson, Drexler, Pippen, Malone, Mullen and Stockton were definately in their prime during that run.

The only matchup problem I would see for the 92 team is LeBron. Magic and Pippen would probably rotate on him. Who on the 12 team checks Barkley, Malone, Ewing or Robinson when two of them are in the game at the same time?

I agree with Kobe, 12 could win a game, but not a series.

The average age of the '92 Dream Team was 29. Average age of the '12 team is 27. However, their years in the league average are the same. Bird and Magic were on for sentimental reasons, no denying that.

The best page from that book came in this quote from the other day:

Larry Bird on whether current Olympic team could beat Dream Team: "They probably could. I haven't played in 20 years and we're all old now."

The best page from that book came in this quote from the other day:

That's like an answer Ty Cobb once gave in the 50's. He was asked what he would hit in "Today's" game. He said, "I'd probably only hit .270." The interviewer responded w/, "Wow, is today's pitching that much better?" Cobb said, "No, I'm 72 years old."

that is almost exactly what I put on Facebook yesterday.

I think the original Dream Team would win by 20.

He didn't have to admit that the '92 team was better.

The original Dream Team was better in my, and most peoples, opinion. Regardless, I like the attitude that these 2012 guys have. I want them to think they're better. I want that to motivate them.

Why single out Jordan? Pippen said they could beat this team by 25. Barkley, if I'm not mistaken, was the first to comment and get this started. You asked me what Kobe was supposed to say. What was Jordan supposed to say?

1. I think too much attention is placed on the entire roster. In a real completitive game, all 12 guys are not going to play. So, take the bottom 3 or 4 guys from each team and forget about them. For the minutes they'd play, it would be a wash. Jordan, Pippen, Mullin, Drexler, Robinson, Ewing, Malone & Barkley. That's the 8 guys you need to match up with for the majority, IMO. If you want to go 9, add Magic or Stockton (if you want to assume him healthy, I think he was injured during the '92 games and didn't play much).

2. I think the "old" argument has been debunked. The '92 team wasn't that old and probably had more players in their prime than the current edition.

3. No one can argue the athleticism of this team, so that's their big advantage. I think the '92 squad is stronger in the paint and probably a little craftier (if that's a word).

Now that the 2012 squad has added the "brow", I think they'd win. He'd dominated Laettner.

Pippen is as bad as Jordan when it comes to that stuff. Chuck at least said, "Not to take anything away from them." Jordan blasted Kobe, and Kobe's comments were not anything beyond, "I think that we could be beat them."

That was the point I made in an argmument here in the office. '12 would have to make this a transition game. If they played only in the half court, then they would get smoked.

Who would guard KD for the Dream Team? Pippen is most likely on LeBron, so not sure who would be on KD. I feel like that's a HUGE matchup advantage for the current squad. That said, Dream Team would probably still win.
