1992 Dream Team vs 2012 Dream Team

Featured Replies

I highly doubt any of those guys listed will put up better numbers than they are going to this year. Olympic rules. I don't see the 92 team being more skilled than the 2012 team.

So, they can play zone. I think that would help with the athletic disadvantage.

You don't think the bigs on the '92 team are more skilled offensive players? Ewing and Malone/Barkley are more skilled than Dwight Howard and Blake Griffin, IMO.

I'm not trying to claim the '92 team would sweep them in a 7 game series, but I do believe they are the better team.

I also think it is worth noting that Larry Bird averaged 20.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in the '91-92 seasons, his final season. The point being, the guy could still play. I'm not saying he'd start and play 40 minutes, but he was capable of giving this team some productive minutes if necessary, IMO.

True. I still think it's asking too much to expect the norm from him. If I have to choose between 92 Bird and 12 LeBron I am taking 12 LeBron or 12 Durant.

Don't see anyway around it, totally agree. Now if this was 85' Bird or something then yeah maybe but LJ and Durant are at the peak of their talent right now and this would be a good matchup for either if all were in their primes. By 1992 Bird is not though, still playing at a pretty good level but not at his absolute best. Be tough to argue Lebron and Durant aren't near their max potential right now.

Individually, you could probably argue Lebron/Bird anytime, so I sure won't dispute a 35 year old Bird with a bad back. Just making the point that Bird could still get it done at a high level.

ONe thing you have to keep in mind is that Lebron is the same size as Karl Malone. To me that's a scary thought.

As for Jordan he is the best I have ever seen but Kobe is on his level, in my opinion.

Bottom line to me is both teams are amazing. There is only 1 Dream Team. That was the 92 team. This team is loaded with skilled individuals. I don't feel like they are as savvy as the guys on that 92 team. It's hard to compare because athletes are different now days that's a fact. In that facet I can see this years team being better. It's just hard for me to think even today anybody is going to stop MJ's will. There still has never been an athlete that imposes their will to win the way he did. Kobe is GREAT! Even he wants to be like Mike though! I watch a lot of NBA. I'm a fan of the way it's grown especially the playoffs the last few years. I think even though guys like Bird don't have the physical traits a guy he'd be matched up with today that he would still fill it up. I'll never forget on the Come Fly With Me video Jordan talks about how he was the dirtiest/savvy player he ever played with the way he held jerseys+worked to get open J's.

As a Kobe guy I think it is pretty cool that MJ said the only person comparable to him is Kobe. Granted that comes off as incredibly egotistical but MJ's ego has been given a pass for over 20 years so no point in acting like we should be surprised he is telling us who we can compare to him. High praise for Kobe coming from MJ though and he just doesn't praise anybody.

^I think a guy gets a pass for ego when he is the consensus greatest ever at his sport. I can tolerate ego when it is backed up.

Simmons touches on this a little bit in his column today.

Anyway, London's starting five looks like Rose, Kobe (the "token veteran" starter who also happens to be outplaying Wade right now), Durant (a heavy favorite after Carmelo's early swoon),9 LeBron (locked in) and Howard (locked in). Note to everyone who loves Spain in an upset pick: Rose-Kobe-Durant-LeBron-Howard double as our first-team All-NBA squad if the season ended today. It's the most loaded USA Hoops starting lineup of all time. Just remember that when you're talking yourself into betraying the country with a "Spain +600" gold medal pick.

That's a great article. I read the Kobe part and you guys can say what you want about me but I got misty eyed when I read Simmons actually praise Kobe. I don't think there has been any journalist more public with his utter contempt for Kobe. To read him praise Kobe the way he did was really cool to read.

Agreed, It made me very sad at the same time.

Yeah. That too.

You have to admit, making up fake trades, deciphering real rumors from fake ones and watching the league's only dominant center treat his final Orlando season with that same glazed/trapped/hostage-like look in his eyes that Katie Holmes has … it's been pretty fun, right?

This line cracked me up.

Has anyone been following this little war of words lately? I find it hilarious. I will recap it a little bit. This is how it all started.

Someone asked Kobe if he thought this team could beat the dream team and of course he said yes they could.

Charles Barley said the only ones on this team that would make their team is Lebron, Kobe, and KD.

That prompted this response from MJ:

2012 Olympics -- Michael Jordan 'laughed' at Kobe Bryant's Dream Team boast - ESPN

Jordan told The Associated Press Thursday that he laughed -- "I absolutely laughed" -- when hearing Bryant's comments that the U.S. squad training in Las Vegas could take Jordan and company.

They interview Pippen during the game yesterday and he said the dream team would win by 25 (Which is stupid).

Someone asked Kobe a followup to what MJ said...

Ben Golliver's post on LA Lakers | Latest updates on Sulia

Here's Kobe Bryant's full, must-read response to Michael Jordan's Dream Team trash talk. Jordan said he laughed when he heard Bryant said the 2012 USA Basketball team could beat the 1992 Dream Team. Bryant's post-game response after USA defeated Dominican Republic in Las Vegas on Thursday night: "So what, he knows I'm a bad mother[expletive]. I'm not really tripping. The fact is, they have Ewing and Robinson and those big guys, it's tough. If you're asking me, 'Can you beat them one game?' Hell yeah, we can beat them in one game. You didn't ask me if we could beat them in a 7-game series. In one game, we can beat them. No question about it."

This current team would get smacked by the dream team by my stance that the normal healthy team USA would/could win a game.
