1992 Dream Team vs 2012 Dream Team

My thought process is very similar to Cats.

I am one of the few old guys not enamored by the names of 1992 and looking at the whole scope of the game.

Why people think LeBron would be a factor at the end of the game when Kobe, Wade and Durant are on the floor is comedy. Go rebound for them Bron in the 4th quarter is all he has to do.

This definitely seems like a young vs old argument.

Some of you guys are showing your age. The athleticism of the 2012 team would be too much for the 92 team IMO. Could a recently injury-induced, retired Larry Bird do anything against someone like LeBron James, I don't see it? How would the retired Magic Johnson do against DRose or CP3? Would he have an advantage? MJ is the greatest but I'd take a duo of Kobe and DWade going at him for a full game with DHoward protecting the basket any day. 92 team was great but they would have by far the two worst players on the floor in Leattner and Mullin. In the modern game with the way basketball is refereed now, 2012 team is a double digit favorite IMO.
I was 11 in '92. I think most have acknowledged the better "athletes" on this team, but I cannot ignore the mental mindset of this team. Dallas had a mental shift last season with guys like Tyson Chandler and Jason Terry on the team, but by skill set alone the Mavs should have been swept. More than anything I believe they would be punked out.

Did I miss something? When did "most athletic" become the same thing as "the best"? I suppose the Mavericks' athleticism was too much for the Heat last season?

And, the "show your age" argument bites both ways. I would argue anyone discounting the '92 is showing theirs.

Laettner wouldn't be on the floor, so it is irrelevant. We've covered this. And, guys like Mullin and Bird give the '92 team some reliable spot-up shooters, to top off a well-rounded team instead of a collection of the most athletic guys you can find.

Because he is currently a factor at the ends of games on a team with Wade. He's the best player on the team. Simply put, he will be on the floor and he will be handling the ball. No team is going to put its best player on the bench at the end of a game.

Also, when considering crunch time, 2012 Kobe isn't as good as he used to be in that situation.

I think the '92 team would have a significant advantage in crunch time of a tight game.

Kobe, Durant and Wade are all more than capable of delivering in the clutch. Would LeBron be on the floor? Yes. Would he handle the ball over Kobe, Wade or CP3 in the clutch? Doubtful. LeBron's 4th quarter issues are a non issue with superstars at every position to take away the pressure.

All my thoughts exactly.

I feel as if everyone is just siding with 1992 based simply on names alone. We are not talking all-time, we are talking two teams and IMO one is more less the Boston Celtics/San Antonio Spurs (in terms of age) and the other is more like the Heat, Thunder, Clippers. Sure that team had Bird, Magic, Barkley, Ewing, Robinson, but they had the old version of them. It's not like this is 84' Magic and Bird, this is older Shaq still trying to play for the Cavs/Celtics Magic and Bird. You look at this upcoming team and you have superstar after superstar who are all still in their primes.

Furthermore when looking at lineups I do not see why it should be so clear the 92' is better, I mean most everyone is acting as if it is a no brainer but I don't see it. What everyone is basically saying is as a whole the NBA then was much better than it is now because basically what you have is two teams filled with the best Americans in the league. When you add into the mix some of these guys for the 92' team aren't exactly in their prime I really don't see why you should just give it to them without argument.

1992

Magic

Jordan

Bird

Barkley/Malone

Ewing

2012

D Rose

Kobe

Lebron

Durant

Howard

Like I said yeah the names of Bird and Magic look real good in this lineup but lets not forget this is end of the career Bird and Magic not in their primes. You think Bird or Magic is going to stop Lebron from getting to the basket at this point? Magic is one of the all time greats and has the size but can he keep D Rose in front of him or from getting to the hoop or up and down the floor in transition? What about Ewing, is he going to be able to protect the rim if Howard goes high post? To me there's just a lot of matchup problems and if they play as one unit I could see the 2012 team laying the hammer down.

Bench

1992

Stockton

Pippen

Drexler

Mullin

Malone/Barkley

2012

CP3

D Will

Wade

Love

Griffin

Bosh

Melo

I mean I know the Original Dream team is the best of all time but let's be real, this 2012 team is going to be insane!

Every player on the '92 team with the exceptions of Bird and Magic were in or darn close to their prime. I don't know where this idea comes from that they were all old and over the hill.

I suppose being young and not reaching your prime yet is irrelevant because you're athletic, and we all know the most athletic team always wins.:idunno:

^ Who on the 2012 is not in their prime? They are more than just a bunch of athletic guys.

Kevin Love

Blake Griffin

Derrick Rose

Kevin Durant

I'd expect all four of those guys to improve to varying degrees over the next few seasons.

I would also say the '92 team is a much more polished offensive basketball team.

So, now I'll ask you, who besides Bird and Magic was past their prime in 1992?

No one really but every single player on the 12 team is in their prime. Sure they might get a little better but they are near the top of their game.

I disagree. I think the guys I listed will, or at least should, make some real improvements. Durant, I wouldn't argue though.

I think the original squad is more skilled and polished overall, and that would be more than enough to offset any disadvantage athletically.

What kind of rules are we using? 1992 NBA, 2012 NBA, or Olympic?

I highly doubt any of those guys listed will put up better numbers than they are going to this year. Olympic rules. I don't see the 92 team being more skilled than the 2012 team.

Olympic rules. These are Olympic teams.

I wish the NBA guys got a little more practice with the international rules. Can you imagine Dwight Howard if he never had to worry about getting called for a goaltend after he reached in and pulled a ball out off the rim?
