1992 Dream Team vs 2012 Dream Team

Featured Replies

The more I think about, I am taking '92 and not thinking twice. I think you guys are really discounting the mental make-up of the '12 team. I would not trust a Dwight Howard or LeBron James to even come off the bench. I have mentioned this before, but I will never forget the last Olympics during a scrimmage Dwight Howard made a mistake and started laughing. I honestly thought Kobe was going to punch him square in the nose for his reaction.

Besides Bird and Magic, the '92 team was still in their prime.

I believe so too.

Chris Mullin was in his prime in 92? Who could he keep up with off of the 2012 roster? Who could Stockton keep up with for that matter? Who has MJ played that is comparable to Kobe? Not saying Kobe would win that matchup but MJ would use his hands full like never before. Pippen vs LeBron? Come on now....

And that's just off the top of my head....plenty of mismatches that would favor 2012.

Kevin Love and Barkley would be fun to watch.

I would go with the 1992 team at this point. Those guys were just winners. If you take the 20 finalist for the 2012 team they have 10 NBA titles and 4 NBA MVP's among them. The original 12 Dream Team players have 23 NBA titles and 15 MVP's. Of course the current players should be expected to add to these numbers, but I'm not willing to discount the original team just yet. As many have said the original players seem to have more mental focus than the younger generation does (excluding Kobe). Everybody want's to know who would guard LeBron, Howard, Etc. While those guys may be better athletes than the original dream team players the majority haven't proven that they can win anything yet. I think Jordan would get so far inside LeBron's head that he wouldn't know what to do with himself.

Chris Mullin was 29 at the time. And in all honesty I forgot about him even being on the team. I think everyone keeps thinking it was made up of 35 year old has beens. John Stockton is the all time leader in assists and steals, both by a very large margin and known as a very dirty and physical player. MJ I would trust against anyone. As for LeBron, he should dominate anyone from history. If it were a skills competition, pick him first. I personally think Bird, Magic, Barkley, Jordan, and others would make him mentally wilt. Same for Dwight Howard.
I'm thinking

1. Kobe

2. Lebron

3. Wade

4. Howard

5. Griffin

6. Rose

7. Paul

8. Williams

9. Durant

10. Love

11. Aldridge

12. Chandler

Amar'e?

I would bet on the 2012 team and take all your money. I would love to see who is gonna stop the guys on the 2012 team having to play them w/o a lot of help on D. Durant, Kobe, LeBron, Wade are unstoppable when you use only 1 guy to defend them. It would be soooo difficult for the 1992 team to score consistently. 2012 is bigger, faster, and stronger at almost every position.

And just to add, Michael Jordan is probably my favorite athlete of all time and best to ever play the game.

Amar'e?
Not over any of those guys. All he can do is score.

He's not one of the 20 finalists.

Nope. But if you add the fact that Mullin would get abused by everyone on 2012, that Bird's back was so bad he could barely walk and that Magic in 1992 isn't even Magic from 1990 then the argument takes on a new life. Christian Laettner was on that team also. Put the rosters next to each other. You'll see the gap is very very small.

You mean the absolutely most overrated NBA player of all time? Yes, he was on that team also.
