Tight game until NCC's QB went out with an ankle injury, then Beechwood looked clearly better.

# 78 Brett Eckymans for Beechwood is the best offensive lineman I have seen on both sides of the river this year. The young man was a monster tonight!

Beechwood's Max Nussbaum ran the opening kickoff back for a TD. The Breds then made short work of Beechwood's D on their first drive to take the lead at 7-6. That was the score at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers responded early in the 2nd quarter to get the lead back at 12-7 (blocked XP this time). Once again it didn't take long for the Breds to respond and they took the lead back at 13-12 (missed XP by the Breds this time). The Tigers then got a 25 yard field goal by Joe Nussbaum to regain the lead at 15-13. If I remember right, the Breds turned the ball over to Beechwood on their next drive and the Tiger's capitalized by driving for a TD to get the lead up to 22-13. NewCath scored late in the 2nd quarter to close to 22-20 at the half.

 

The second half became more of a grind it out game. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Both teams had a couple decent drives but could not score. Beechwood missed a couple of field goal tries. Vocke then had a big punt return down to about the 15 and the Tigers were able to grind it into the end zone to get the score up to 29-20 early in the 4th quarter. New Cath's offense was struggling without Hightchew, who injured his ankle late in the 3rd quarter. Beechwood was finally getting some stops on the Hayes runs. When Nussbaum went out in the fourth quarter (not sure, perhaps a mild concussion?), Beechwood went back to their standard offense, handed the ball to Vocke and was able to stay effective. Beechwood ended the game at NewCath's one yard line following a 6 minute drive that was pretty much hand the ball to Vocke. Some great runs by Vocke in the drive but New Cath stuffed him at the one. Beechwood and NCC then let the clock run out. Final score 29-20.

 

More big plays by Beechwood's stars (Vocke, Nussbaum) than NewCath's stars (Hightchew, Hayes). Hayes impressed me tonight much more than in the other games I have seen him. Very nice RB who hits the hole hard and has good wheels. Beechwood's kickoff and punt returns were the difference in the game.

 

It took a quarter for Beechwood's line to get back up to speed after playing the last three games versus 1A competition. After the first quarter the battle in the trenches evened out a little after NCC had controlled the line of scrimmage early.

 

Not much effective passing in this game at all. New Cath had one very nice crossing pattern they threw for a TD but that was about it besides their usual bubble passes. Beechwood threw perhaps 5 passes all night? They had a couple completions, including one big one on 3rd down in a first half drive.

 

Once Hightchew went out near the end of the third quarter (ankle injury), NCC struggled on offense. Best wishes for a quick recovery for Hightchew.

 

Nussbaum looked fine on the sidelines after he went out so hopefully he was held out as a precautionary move. Best wishes on a clean bill of health and quick return to Max.

 

It was another excellent hard fought NCC / Beechwood game between two great programs. Good luck to both teams in the playoffs.

Move it back 5 yards then rekick, ball doesn't make endzone and Nussbaum takes it to the house. Kudos to Beechwood they were the better team tonight. Cam Vocke looks like Barry Sanders out there they way he stops on a dime and changes direction, makes guys miss him and then accelerates and is gone in a flash. By far the fastest player in NKY. Having Hightchew go down on 3rd or 4th play of the 2nd half and miss the rest of the game didn't help the Breds, although the defense was much better. Good luck to both teams in the playoffs.

I seem to recall Hightchew getting hurt on NCC's second drive of the second half and it was later in the third quarter, maybe 3 or 4 minutes to go?

 

I believe Nussbaum went out on the last play of the 3rd quarter for Beechwood.

Didn't Rash state earlier that Vocke is the fastest 40 but Nussbaum is faster after 40?
