I really liked both Boise and Georgia's uniforms. I actually like most of Oregon's uniforms. I'm a big fan of the Oregon helmets. I like the finish. Not sure what it is called, but it isn't the standard shiny finish that most schools have.

The point of that Grantland.com article cited earlier is that schools with longstanding traditions of success, such as NDU, PSU, Alabama, etc., don't need the wow factor of the uniforms. Their tradition of success is what gets recruits to buy in.

 

Oregon, on the other hand, was a Pac 10 dreg for its eternity (similar to UK in the SEC) until it started modernizing with the uniforms. That willingness to go for a stylish, outside-the-box look appeals to a certain segment of the youth population, and aided them in ramping up their recruiting to the point they were no longer a dreg, but a legit national power.

 

Oregon is selling style. Alabama sells tradition. If you don't have tradition, you've got to have something else to sell, and Oregon found it.

Amen, A great football program doesn't need any "tools". They are the ones winning ear in and year out by actually playing good football and winning, not being poster children for Toys-r-Us. . What a concept!! Actually letting tradition, great/legendary coaches and lines of All Americans speak for the program. Dang!! Just think how good Bear Bryant, Ara Parsegian (spelling), Woody Hayes, Joe Paterno, Daryl Royal, John Robinson, Barry Switzer, Tom Osborne along with many others and all of their programs might have been if theywould have relied on gimmicks to get players....who knwew?? :lol: For all you real young guys...those were football coaches.

You all don't get this. Kids don't CARE ABOUT WHAT TEAMS DID IN THE PAST. They won't care about what legendary coach coached there, and stuff like that. If that was the case, then those schools wouldn't even need to recruit. People care about what is going on now, if you are a good recruiter and can sell kids on your program then they come. You might not want to believe it but uniforms and how they look is one thing that can attract some players. Style of play is another thing that attracts players, the type of college life they could have in a given city attracts players, and winning attracts players.

 

I mean it's not like it was in the past when tradition mattered to players. Yes players know about teams with great traditions, but that matters little to them. If it didn't matter to them we would never see great programs go through down years like teams like USC, Notre Dame, Alabama, etc. kind of went through before the right coach got things back on track. Like Pete Carroll did for USC, Nick Saban did for LSU and Alabama, and the jury is still out on Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. If traditions mattered most to kids, then these programs would be on top every year. However it takes things to sell programs to kids, it takes coaches to able to really talk the kids into coming. It takes little things like uniforms to get a player sometimes to choose one school over another.

Half of the uniform looks like the Dallas Knights from Any Given Sunday and the other half looks like caution tape. Hideous.

For the most part, tradition is exactly what most of these schools are attempting to get out from underneath. With the exception of Georgia, most of the schools doing radical things with uniforms are from places that aren't traditional powers and don't have the massive local recruiting base that the traditional powers have. If it gives a school like Oregon -- which has to rely on grabbing kids out of California and other, larger states to be competitive -- some sort of recruiting edge, then I don't blame them at all. Tradition? In what way is being on the outside looking in but somehow observing "tradition" useful to these schools? "Tradition" says that Oregon has no shot at competing with USC, UCLA, or the rest of the Pac-10. I don't blame them one bit for attempting to throw it out the window. I wish UofL had uniforms like Oregon's... I really do.

 

Tradition? They can keep it. Tradition is for church and Christmas dinner. I have no use for it when it comes to football.

I like some of the new uniforms but I hate some of them as well. I don't see how anyone could like the Maryland uniforms. What are they supposed to be, the state seal or something? Just horrible. At least make both sides match. Even a Terrapin shell pattern would be okay. I don't think you have to stick with tradition all the way but I don't like changing the school colors like that.

From one side I think they look like "Crash Dummies" than they turn around and looks like Bozo the Clown.
