Bottom line is look at the ones that for the most part don these hazmat suits. They have a good "football team" every now and then and "want" to be noticed. The teams that we talk about are" football programs" that are there year in and year out. They don't need a gimmick to get noticed, people know who they are when they come on the field.

So, let them wear their new/stylish unis. They are comic relief for the ones winning the championships on their way to picking up their trophy!

Not sure anyone has disagreed with that. Although, tradition hasn't been too kind recently to ND, Alabama pre-Saban, Penn St...etc. Very few programs are top 5 every single year. They all go in cycles. The kids today don't remember ND being a powerhouse but they do remember Oregon having the nicest facilities and coolest gear in the recent past. And, the last 2/3 years for Oregon have been pretty darn good. I don't see them as a flash in the pan.

There are only a handful of traditional power "football programs." There are a lot more schools out there that aren't competitive, don't win, and have traditions of failure. Why do you fault some of them for going out and upgrading their uniforms, building nice stadiums, state-of-the-art field houses, etc. and getting their schools noticed?

 

By the way, Ohio State, LSU, and Navy will unveil new Nike Pro Combat uniforms this year. Alabama, Florida, and Ohio State each began wearing them last year. It seems like even the traditional powerhouses want in on it.

People are resistant to change. Nothing new. It's been going on forever. There will always be those who take a stand against the way trends are going.

ND isn't that fair a comparison, most kids can't get into the school grade wise, something the school needs to think about fixing if they want to compete with the rest of the teams.

To say tha Oregon has not benefited from Phil Knight and his support including crazy unis is inaccurate. It's really that simple. Buzz helps gets kids.

No one said anything about building nice stadiums, state-of-the-art field houses, etc. No one has a problem with uniform change. It's the CONSTANT change and some of the absurdity of some of the uniforms (see Maryland) that some of us think is ridiculous. I don't fault a school for gimmicks to get recruits, I merely said it won't last. If the recruits these day need a hip uniform to lure them in, fine, but I stand by my statement that those schools won't keep getting said recruits if that's all they have to offer. I just don't see it lasting.

 

If there's money to be made, than sure, they'll get in on it. It's always about the almighty dollar and that's fine. But that just strengthens my statement about teams like Oregon not being able to make it last, if everyone starts doing it, they'll be right back where they started from.

Yes and no. Don't tell me those kids that go to Stanford or some of these other great academic institutions couldn't get into ND. Problem is, they no longer corner the market.

With all the teams wanting to update their uniforms these days and schools' increasing willingness to accept new designs and alternatives it's likely Nike and Under Armour won't hold back when schools renew their uniform contracts or are ready for a redesign.

But...if indeed the reason they're coming to those schools is the uniforms then when everyone else does it they lose any edge they had. Then what do they have to keep these kids coming? Seems like uniforms would be an easy thing to compete with and in a few years Oregon and Boise are going to need some new gimmick.
