I dont think Mayfield will rely just on the run unless it's successful. Mayfield can pass the ball and will if need be. This thread is similar to the Bardstown thread which went along the lines of "our speed is going to kill you" and "track speed is a wonderfull sight in the open field". Funny thing it didn't happen often enough. NCC has a fine team and I'm looking forward to seeing them and I'm sure Vicars and Biehl are the real deal but we got some deals too. I can't wait to show the deal behind door #1 first.

His name is Sam Diehl not Beihl or you can call him Mr. Diehl :sssh:

1998, Middlesboro beat Mayfield 27-6.

I don't know how Mayfield didn't win state that year, that was the worst butt whooping I ever took on a football field, I was the only one w/ positive yardage that game, but man I took some shots that game. I remember walking off the field thinking "No body can beat that team" so I don't know how Middlesboro drummed them by that much.

Middlesboro was pretty freakin' good, and it was on a day that everything went right for them and wrong for Mayfield. I don't doubt that Middlesboro was the better team, but the game should have been closer.

We are working on trying to get the game broadcasted on northernkentuckysports.com -- who did the broadcasts last year? Did any local NKY radio station cover the game?

The Louisville ICN6 station carried the game live last year. ICN6 in Nky picked up the feed I would guess. The Nky radio station did the Beechwood and Highlands state games.

Mayfield says they can pass but the state championship game is a bad time to start trying.

Adam Shelton has passed for 1421 yards so far on the season so that isn’t bad. Coach Joe will tell you that if he is beating you with the run that is what he will stay with. It is the same with the passing game. Mayfield just uses what will work.

They won't beat you with 30-40 yard downfield plays, but, are very effective on the 5 to 15 yard routes and screens and can move the chains with it..

If you can hit the screens and underneath routes with consistency, you have a good chance to move the ball on NewCath. For some reason, covering underneath has been an achilles heel the whole season. They don't cover backs well out of the backfield. They fly to the ball, and have a very good run defense, but their communication on pass defense is lacking. When they drop into their zones, they don't pass off receivers and get caught looking into the backfield too much. That's basically their one major flaw.

Man, from the looks of this poll, I would say that Mayfield is the heavy underdog, I like it, ;)

Yeah...Mayfield will definitely throw some screens and short routes to the tight end and try and expose that if there is a weakness their coaches will find it! I'm gettin excited!!! Go Cards!

Just curious, how far is Mayfield from Louisville?

I used to live there, plan on 250 miles to the stadium.

I like NCC in this one. Extreme athletic team. Will be the most athletic team Mayfield has faced. They can run the ball extremely well then open up the field like a surgeon with the passing game. Not too mention the defense is very tough alot of kids play both ways.

Sounds like Mayfield relies on the run. They won't get it done just running the ball against a speedy physical NCC team ask Lex Christian if you dont believe me. Mayfield says they can pass but the state championship game is a bad time to start trying.

Mayfield can pass as the nearly 1500 yards shows...it is not like we CAN'T pass...just have not had to...old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it...and I will state this right now...NCC might have been able to stop the run this year...but they will not have faced a better set of backs that can not only run around you but over you than what they will face this Saturday. If they can stop the 3-headed monster of Rust, Hatchell, and Dumas then I will be the first to tip my cap and say well done and congratulations on being state champs...but don't get overzealous in trying to stop the run because Shelton can and will burn you deep if you start to crowd the line of scrimmage. Will be interesting to see how much time Diehl has to throw as Mayfield has been able to get pressure and punish quarterbacks here in the 2nd half of the season. Should be a fun ballgame with a lot of ebbs and tides in this one...may have to get a prescription for nitro-glycering for this one...

GO CARDS!!! :ylsuper:

The battle within the war in this game may very well be mental. Before Mayfield beat Bardstown, my impression was that they knew they were playing well but weren't quite sure how good they were. Then they thumped the Tigers, and are running very high on emotion now. Unfortunately, that is somehwat the way the Tigers were after they thumped Danville, and the real test for the Cardinals may be staying grounded.

NCC is not going to beat up on Mayfield's OL. I think their backs are good enough to punch it for 3 yards a pop against NCC. Less than the 7 a pop against Bardstown, but still good enough to keep good field position. NCC may throw against Mayfield, but I don't think they're going run a whole lot.

Whoever punches the other early may take the wind out of the other's sails. In the end, I think it could come down to kicking. Mayfield's punter got some awful good hang time, and their field goal kicker is excellent. I said a 10-pt. game before, I'll revise to Mayfield 27 - NCC - 21.
