Ok, if they are co-ed, what is the size of the school approx?

Not sure of the exact numbers, but there are only 8 teams between the two on the 1A list in size...

After watching the Mayfield/Bardstown game last night, I have to go with the Cards in this one. Admittedly, I haven't seen NCC this year and can only judge them based on what is said on BGP. This is what I know about Mayfield after last night. 1. Their line play is very solid. 2. They can smash you in the face with their running style. 3. They have the ability to shut down the outside thereby neutralizing their opponent's speed. I think the thing that impressed me most about last night's performance was Mayfield's ability to fight off blocks. I can't count the number of times that I saw Bardstown try to run outside last night only to get tackled for little or no gain by Mayfield defenders who had fought through Bardstown's blocks.

One possible weakness: pass defense may be suspect.

This will be a great game, not sure if I'll be down there for it or not yet.

There are "Good Luck NewCath" and "Go Breds" and "Good Luck Sam and NCC" signs up on billboards all around Newport/Ft. Thomas. Great to see the support, but kind of bittersweet for me knowing we didn't get to state my senior year to see that.

Anyway, I of course will be picking my 'Breds in this one. No score prediction.... just win state for Bob, boys.

I have to pick Mayfield in this one, they destroyed my Rockets and I honestly thought pre game we matched up well, I just don't know how Mayfield does it. You come into a game and say well physically they look similar or smaller than there opponents, then they just flat out whip your tail! My only knock on Mayfield is they need some new Uni's, and a revamped War Memorial Stadium :D

477 students.

The Girls basketball team has been to the Sweet 16 two of the last three years, has been to the All-A basketball tourney in 2001, 2002, 2003, the Girls volleyball team was in the final four in 2003, the Girls track team was state runner-up last year. They have lots of participation too.

While I could see Mayfield coming out with 8 in the box if NCC goes under center, I can't believe Mayfield would start with 8 in the box if NCC comes out with 4 or 5 wideouts out of the shotgun in a no-huddle. But it will be fun to see who comes out with what.

It appears both defenses will be facing offensive sets that they are not used to seeing.

Gosh, after reading Hearsey's 20 point plan I can't imagine how Mayfield ever lost a game.

Hearsay saw what our team is like when we play up to our potential...in our first loss to Marshall County...it was that the boys looked like they had read too much of their press on how they were going to be unstopable this season and were not ready to play (although it turned out that the Marshals had a much better team that most people anticipated)...and then their 2nd loss Mayfield was still reeling from the Marshall County loss in the first quarter and gave up two scores but fought back and lost in the last couple of minutes...and Tilghman is one of those rivalry games that you can throw out the window type of games...although they will be the first to say that they did not play up to their potential in the first half of the year, but have turned it on here once we got into Class "A" play. Coach Morris stated this Saturday morning that he has never seen a team "throw the switch" the way this team has this postseason. Win or lose it has been a pleasure watching this team grow this year...just hope they have one more left in them and can match up well with NCC.

I will agree that Mayfield does need vast improvements to War Memorial Stadium and they would love to make some, but we share the stadium with Graves County and the two schools can not agree on the improvements and what should be made...but as far as the uniforms go...Mayfield's are just fine...I like tradition and I like Mayfield not having their names on the back of their uniforms...makes you remember that you play for the name on the front...not on the back. Plus the red solid helmets shining in the night is a trademark...just like Notre Dame's golden domes. :ylsuper:

No, they can keep the no names on the back, they just look kind of ratty and long, its like they dont really fit them properly. And yes I like the red helmets too, I just think they would look more tough in some tighter jerseys :thumb:

Sorry...misunderstood...and I agree I don't like the long jerseys either especially sticking out on our backs and receivers...something to grab onto while trying to make a tackle...

I think Mayfield has been sheltered in their corner of the state. Somerset scored 26 on Danville, who was throttled by Bardstown who was throttled by Mayfield. I don't think anyone in Class A scores 20+ on the Breds and they win 24-14. Have a good retirement coach Schneider with your 2nd state title!

Understood. I'm sure if you looked at the NCC vs CovCath game film you would wonder how NCC ever qualified for the playoffs. I think the thing you have to remember with 1A teams is sometimes their strenghts aren't all that strong against 3A or 4A teams and their weaknesses are very weak against that type of competition. Still better for Mayfield and NCC to play those types of games as both have district games that are often blow-outs.

The Scribe usually addresses this... have these teams ever met up before?

2 AA state finals in the 80's I think...

The new away white jerseys are rather tight. My son can barely get his over the pads.

There were 34 Freshmen on the NCC Frosh team that went undefeated and won the NKY Class A/AA title.

Wish we could get NCC to agree to a Forsh battle with the Birds to see whot the real top freshman team in the area is year after year. The Birds have had back to back undefeated freshman teams and have outscored their opponents around 600-100 in that span. Not sure exactly but in 2004 the score differential was 277-50 and this years squad had an even wider margin!

I know Highlands would love to have another local freshman game and would love for it to be NCC. What will it take to get this game going? What a great natural rivalry. Many of the NCC kids live in Ft. Thomas and I believe some even play in the Ft. Thomas Jr. League. It would be a lot of fun to watch!

But anyway, back to the game at hand. I voted for Mayfield in the poll because I think they will win. But I would love to see a NCC victory and have them bring at least one championship trophy back up here to Northern Ky. Go Breds!
