Simon-Kenton 42 Walton-Verona 33

Recommended Posts

The matchups seem to favor SK when they play WV... did not see the game, but wondering how many turnovers W-V had?

Walton had 19+ turnovers against minimal pressure defense. They did not use their size advantage at all and tried to guard Wainscott and Owings with much slower players. Stowers had a great game plan and his girls stuck with it. This was a big game for the #1 district seed. SK was fired-up (both players and coaches) and Walton looked like they were going to a funeral. SK out-hustled, out-rebounded and out-played Walton, pretty much what I expected.

Seems like SK might be the real deal. I must say I expected this one to be much closer. Looks like a very low scoring game. Does anyone have any details.

Here is the linescore

2/12/2011 Simon Kenton 42 Walton-Verona 33

Walton-Verona 6 10 8 9 33

Simon Kenton 15 18 5 14 42

Walton-Verona (18-8) -- Clinkenbeard 3, Slavey 2, Dixon 13, Judy 4, Sandlin 2, Taulbee 9. Simon Kenton (14-8) -- Wainscott 7, Owings 12, Stephenson 14, Cook 2, Orr 3, Tomlin 2, Blevins 2.

Looks like W-V defense on Wainscott worked but they did not have much offense output except Dixon--really wasn't much offense from either team

WV must have done something well, holding SW to zero field goals.

She didn't need to score. She ran the show and the others stepped-up. She really didn't shoot much but made some free throws down the stretch. Owings did what she wanted because the defender from WV was too slow to stay with her. Don't quite understand putting the slowest defender on Owings who may be the fastest player on SK.

What!!! How about making layups. Walton tried to use their size, but too many point blank layups missed. Owings scored 12 points and that is what you call doing whatever you want. Wow I missed this game or saw a different game than you. Walton held Simon to 42 points you should win that game. Defense was fine, offense was terrible.

Walton did miss some open easy shots but the guard play was the problem again. They had too many unforced turnovers such as dribbling with no real pressure and kicking it out of bounds. SK played a slow deliberate style and controlled the tempo. When Owings wanted to score, she just blew by the defender. Walton's point guard couldn't stay with her. Again, SK had a good game plan and it worked.

SK guards were so much more Superior and faster offensively and defensively than Walton's it was not even funny. Walton's inside players could not get involved because their guards could not get them the ball. Wainscott did not force the issue on offense, her presence alone drew enough attention that it created space for her team to score. SK took care of the ball and out rebounded Walton. Walton has a better inside game than SK. SK has better guards, that's why we beat Walton on a regular basis and will continue to do so.

This is what is helping SK lately; Wainscott seemed to almost try to score on every possession and others are involved now....but perhaps the biggest difference is the SK Freshman understanding the SK defensive system which takes some time to get.

Walton has a very good team. If they can pull it together by district time they could win it. They are a team that can beat almost any team on any night when they are firing on all cylinders. I believe it will be very hard for SK to beat Walton three times in a row. If you could only win one out of three, the next is the one you want to win.

You have one of the best guards but not all three. The difference is Coach Sowers coaches to your guards strengths and Miller coaches to Walton guards weaknesses.
