One fact we need to also keep in mind. In the past four years, I believe only Trinity, Highlands, Ft. Campbell and BEECHWOOD under COACH RASH have won 2 state championships. If anyone questions his coaching ability, I am embarrassed for you. I will try not to comment on this anymore in this game thread. I don't want to detract further here from a nice win by a very good, very talented Mayfield team.

 

Not sure that the coaching aspect is a big as you think. They do have a terrific group of coaches and have maintained that continuity for a long time. But as Noel himself has said on many occassions, "its not the X's and O's, its the Jimmy's and Joe's". His Jimmy's and Joe's are better than a lot of NKY schools. They roll in games they are supposed to roll in. Now, throw in some upsets here and there and you will can argue about the coaching ability.

Jason, Mayfield has fallen off, we are currently in the midsts of our longest period without a title since the class system began. There appears to be a resurgents in the program looking at what we have comming up over the next 5-6 years which is impressive given we are a small rural town that does not get alot of people moving in or out or have a nearby metro area to draw from. I think we will have a pretty good shot next year if our young line works hard this off season. The new qb is Luke Guhy's litttle brother and he is ahead of Luke Guhy in terms of where he is at so we will see. I get the feeling some feel as the Romans did when the Barbarians sacked Rome. There should be no disgrace in getting beat by Mayfield, we are in the top 10 in the nation in all time wins and have a couple titles ourselves. The good thing for you guys is that all streaks have to eventually come to an end (except for UK-UT apparently). Bw should be able to use these losses as motivation to prepare for next year. Danville got us like 5 or 6 times in a row so we know your pain. It seems to me like alot of people in NKY just expect BW to win and have no respect for us and we are not your ordinary 1A program. Our expectations are a state title ever year and we are not intimidated by Bw or anyone else but by now I suspect that Mayfield has got that point across. I think you guys feel like you are slipping but I have no doubt BW will still get a share of the pie but we always get our share as well.

The Cardinals have more depth and better speed, but the key difference in the line play. Beechwood's lines just are not what they used to be. No longer are the Beechies large, and they don't seem to be overly quick either. Two area the Tigers must improve upon. 1-Quarterback as I have said all year long-this was not a strength of the team, and 2-the line play.

I miss Bob Burnett as well! I know you meant Bernie Barre, but since Coach Burnett left I think the quality of our line play has diminished as well.

I think you are correct here! But in my opinion this current group of coaches only focus on the Jimmy & Joe's when they are Jimmy Brown or Joe Theisman! If you are Jimmy Who or Joe Blow, you don't get developed or a chance to earn a spot. I think that is one of the reasons for the smaller teams. Kids are not sticking it out because they don't even get a chance to earn a spot or really even contribute. This current senior class probably had around 20 guys playing when they were freshman team and they finish with 9. Beeechwood always had talent but it was the lunch bucket guys that made the difference. That is one area where these coaches need to improve!

QB is a big issue as well. The freshman team had a 7th grader at QB. He did a great job but 1)he won't be on varsity for a while and with his body I'm not sure he will be a QB.

I personally don't see him at qb either..He has pretty good feet for being such a big kid for his age.. I think he will end up being a TE or a T..

I would have to agree that BB is missed. He was a great line coach and defensive coach; however, I'm not sure MY is missed. I'm not sure the present OL coach, Brills?, knows as much as BB. BB when he took over as interim head coach, ran the team. Prior to taking over, he ran weights in the offseason every year. MY never showed. Even when MY came back, BB and Rash ran the practices. MY was there in body only.

I think a lot of this runs in cycles for small schools. As TP pointed out, it has been a while since Mayfield won a title. When you are Mayfield and Beechwood you expect to win a title every year. So you end up with a 10-4 record losing in the state semifinals. Two of the losses were to the favorites for state champion in their class and the other two losses were to 5A schools that won playoff games. One of the wins was over the state finalist and favorite in 2A and another win was over a 2A playoff winner. But at Beechwood, it doesn't feel great. And that is a good thing. I don't doubt that Mayfield was disappointed in their butt kicking in the state championship last year. When you are the top programs, that is the way it is.

 

Beechwood will be back to more of a Beechwood size line next year. As to the line play dropping since Burnett left, all I know is three linemen off our 2008 team went to D1 schools, two on scholarship and one as a preferred walk on. How many times has that happened at Beechwood? The 2009 team's line had a tough time. They were undersized and the guys we had played hurt. This year's line was just young. They will be very good next year. Things do run in cycles and 2009 was a little bit down on the size side of things. That's just the way it goes.

 

As to guys not sticking it out or coaches not developing players - I think some of the guys didn't stick it out because they didn't do the work they needed to in order to EARN playing time. Some of the guys didn't stick it out because of injury. Some of the guys ... it was other reasons. I don't blame the coaches for any of those guys not being here. That was their choice. The guys who did stick it out, they got the playing time their hard work and talent earned them. I can not think of one player on this team that didn't get a fair chance to prove they deserved more playing time. When you get your chance, you have to make plays. If you get your chance and make mistakes, it gets even harder to get another chance. That is just the way it is.

 

These seniors came a long way from freshman year. Due to injuries and other reasons, they lost arguably the best 5 or 6 players in their class - players that would be key contributors this year if they were still playing. To make it to the state semifinals after all they endured says a lot for the guys who were healthy and able to stick it out. Football is more demanding than any other sport IMO. It is a credit to all those who compete in a program as demanding as Beechwood's so to those 9 or 10 seniors that gave everything they could to Beechwood for the past four years - THANK YOU! I believe you got the most out of your talent and you should be very proud of what you accomplished in your years at Beechwood. Not many players in the state can say they were a part of two state championship teams.

Voice, thats exactly how it is at Mayfield. Players dont stick it for a variety of reasons and sometimes you have the talent but not the right mix (Mayfield 07 &08). Beechwood was probably missing just a couple of players from having a title contender. Mayfield is like that sometimes, we had a player that left in 8th grade that went down to Nashville who would have the 2nd best player on last years team. Beechwood will be ok, but you're not going to win it every time, you just want your share , just like Mayfield does.

You mean like jumping offsides multiple times? or, dropping more passes than you caught? or, receiving multiple unsportsmanlike calls because of your mouth? or, refusing to come of the field when your sub was sent in causing the coaches to use a time out? Just wondering because none of the players above lost their opportunity! We saw many of these same mistakes on Friday against Mayfield.

OUCH! I have seen all of those instances. Shoot, earlier in the season, one of the coaches sons wouldn't come off the field. They called time out, he came out of the game and BAM...he was back in....but hey, he is the 'golden boy'. Has been since he came to the school.

^ emporer ... players make mistakes and you coach them up. How do you earn playing time? Unfortunately for some, God given talent is a big part of it. It is hard not to put the most talented players on the field. You have to weigh the mistakes against the big plays and if the big plays outweigh the mistakes, then you have to live with a mistake here and there and try to coach that mistake away. I believe all those mistakes were addressed and dealt with. And I don't recall any of those happening last Friday except the dropped passes. And some of that was addressed. I know of one player who was taken out of pass receiving situations because of the drops. So I wouldn't say those issues weren't addressed as well. I believe some players received less playing time on Friday because the talent on the field from Mayfield was beyond them. You may not like hearing that but that is my opinion.

One of those seniors starting for the first time so perhaps inexperienced is applicable more than young. On the defensive side all juniors. The backups were all underclassmen. So out of the top 12 linemen who all played a significant amount, there are 3 seniors. Do you think the line will be better next year?
