True blue (and gold)
HOW DO THEY DO THAT YOU ASK??? Is there an answer to that question? At the high school, we start class at 8:25 and release at 3:00 pm. We are on a seven period schedule, has 5 minutes between classes and a 25 minute lunch. ColonelCrazy
My concern with this is that it's first and foremost a financial decision. I'm not sure the additional minutes in the day equate to an additional "day" of class in each subject. Interesting point, and something I would agree with. Take a class such as Calculus. You cannot move on to Chapter 2 until you fully understand Chapter 1. In order to understand Chapter 1, you have to go home, work some problems & complete the homework. When you come back to class the next day, you can review the homework & see what you did right or wrong. Then, you ask questions and eventually move on to Chapter 2. Although the minutes are the same, it could affect the student's ability to learn. I don't know if it would, but I think it's interesting & something that should be researched. Good point, Clyde. ColonelCrazy
We looked into it at our school but the parents wanted no part of it. It does not surprise me that parents would object to it, but I'm interested to know why. Were they simply opposed to change? Were working parents concerned about their kids being home (without parental supervision) for an extra day?

HammerTime
Probably. However, if we're trying to improve education should that be a concern? Is it really improving eduction or cutting costs? I have no problem with doing it but I'm just saying.

My guess is it's more of a budget issue than a qualify of education issue.
True blue (and gold)
Post 12 and 13 Those posts did not answer my question. Just because school starts and ends at a certain time does not give details as to what they are counting as instructional minutes. I don't see that posted on their webpage, either. According to the most recent test scores, they rank 98th out of 229 public schools for average ACT score. I don't know if that ranking has changed since the implementation of the 4 day school week.
