First congrats to the Colonels for playing a very good game. Nice discipline; nice execution; kept their heads and hearts in the game after going down 20-0; nice job by the coaches. I do want to thank the CovCath coaches for running the Mafia-Cat offense on one play and for attempting the half back pass.

 

CovCath's O line did a nice job in this game. CovCath ran the ball well at times, although in the second half the Birds D did a much better job stopping the run. CovCath's O line did nice job pass blocking the entire game. Play of the game was probably Ritter's return of the second half kick off (ball did not cross the goal line and it was a good call be the ref from my angle and I had a good one). It breathed life into CovCath and they really came to life in the second half.

 

Birds O has to do a much better job running the ball consistently when Compton isn't in there. Fumbles have to stop. If you cannot establish that you can and will run the ball when you want and need to, the passing game becomes much more difficult.

 

As for all the talk about the rest of the 5A opponents now believing they Birds can be beat, I'd hope they've always believed that. Birds have a good team, but folks thinking they are invincible and would waltz to another state championship weren't being realistic. They are not good enough to have 3 fumbles in a game; they are not good enough to have breakdowns on kick off coverage; they are not good enough to have a bunch of penalties and expect to win games against good opponents. And they will face better opponents in the playoffs.

 

Glad to see CovCath provide some very respectable opposition. As I 've said previously, CovCath returning to respectability will be good for Highlands. Playing a good game against Highlands last Friday night may turn out to be a very, very good thing for Highlands in their quest for No. 20 this year. I think a lot of players took long looks in the mirror on Saturday. At least I hope so. We can be pretty good, but we aren't that good if we do the things that manifested themselves Friday night. I hope there has been a lot of soul searching because if there hasn't, No. 20 may just have to wait.

Go 'Birds! Work hard and finish the regular season strong! And remember, when you guys walk onto the field against any opponent, be it CovCath, Dixie, Scott or Ryle, you have a huge bull's eye on your back... everybody wants to knock off the defending champion.

Cov Cath definitely earned a ton of respect from the Birds and their fans. TheBirds looked gassed and tight and the 2nd half KO return by Ritter was key in igniting their 2nd half dominance. The Birds have to pass block better on the edge, they were getting worked by the Cov Cath Dlinemen.

 

With Compton out of the lineup the next best option is Towles IMO. He is elusive, fast and hangs onto the ball. Compton's 2nd injury thus far this season to the head is concerning. With all of the concern nowdays regarding concussions, i certainly wouldnt rush him. The problem is will Streeter and True be able to fill that void?

 

The Defense for the Birds looked good, especially in the 2nd half but they had trouble defending the much taller Connelly. Bir will be a very good QB but he threw some picks that should never have been thrown.

 

Ty Seidl was layng the wood all night long and is very fast at his position. With all of the fumbles i was surprised we didnt see Ty's younger brother Colin. He may have been able to provide a spark to the feeble 2nd half offense.

 

A win is a win in my book and it was a great night for football and a great crowd. Good luck to both teams and hopefully we get to see a rematch back at DCM Field in November.

As I have stated in other threads that I have posted a scoring summary, I wonder why more don't do it. I mean we talk about the game but usually no one post a scoring summary to read what actually happened in the game. I wish more would do so!

True is a good option running the ball as well. Streeter is a nice RB but needs space, he's more of a scat-back. Towels has the Roelthisberger hard to take down style along with quick deceptive feet.

 

Bir is going to be a very good QB. I had him over in the BCPFWL he is an high IQ kid. The game is a lil fast for him right now but he's getting a lot better.

I just assumed they were gassed b/c Cov. Cath was manhandling them in the 2nd half particularly in the 4th. Isn't this when the other team is supposed to gas out and Highlands pulls away? Certainly not the case last friday.

TOG ... I believe you are tracking that info for CCH, right? Maybe no one else on here is keeping stats/info like that for their team. I guess it would be easy to write down if you want to bring a pad and pen to the game but most people just want to watch the game and not "work".

Let me first say that the Highlands Defense did an outstanding job last night. However, Cov. Cath played conservative in the red zone on 4th and short when they were driving seemingly at will against Highlands outside of the red zone. Their drives were long and clock chewing. They chewed up nearly 1/2 of the 2nd qtr on one drive alone. CCH shot themselves in the foot. They were the better team last night offensively.

Patrick had a great game. Compton was very strong as well. Highlands wasn't flat and no excuses are to be made for the close call. I think Streeter and True are two great backs. Abner, Seidl and Bruns had some great tackles last night, too. Cov. Cath was much more aggressive and all the credit goes to them for forcing the turnovers. Their D line was pushing Highlands around like rag dolls in the 2nd half. I'm not sure what the fabric of this team is, but there are some obvious kinks in the armor. I look for a rough road ahead for the Bluebirds now b/c teams see them as beatable. This game has given new life to all upcoming 5a opponents. After last night, the title is up for grabs and very far from a sure thing. When CCH scored to get within 7, the Bluebird offense froze on their next drive 3 and out. They were obviously in unchartered water and seemed to unravel offensively after that....Can't say I blame them. These kids haven't tasted anything close to defeat in several years. Their title hopes hinge on the team leadership. Will this defeat galvanize or tear apart? Should be one heckuva November in Kentucky.

Kudos to Cov Cath. Coach Wirth and staff put together a good game plan, and the players executed well. The fumbles for Highlands are a serious problem, but let's put it in perspective. To this point in the season, we haven't put the ball on the ground this much. If the Birds suffer another game of fumbelitis, then it may be a larger concern. Time will tell.

 

The wheels aren't coming off the bus, and the train isn't off the tracks. The game provided plenty to focus on for both sides of the ball. A normal week of practice this week, and then a short week next week in preparation for the Thursday game against Ryle.
