Birds turned the ball over and the young Bir did a good job passing. He has to cut down on the INT's but in 2 years he will be one of the top 10 QB's in the state. Highlands passing game didn't get it going much second half was quiet.

 

13 total passes by Towles tells you the game plan changed in the 2nd half. I'd like to see a rematch in November.

You got to give credit to CCH. Down 20-0 away to a team that has been rough on them lately and they come back to be a tipped pass away from sending it in to overtime. Showed a lot of character. Would love to see the CCH-Dixie game.

As a side note...student senate for both schools got together and called this a pink out for cancer. Both schools print and sell tshirts and Highlands prints theirs to say Beat cancer and Cov Cath. They may have won but displayed a total lack of class on that one.

I think it simply comes down to the fact that other teams not named Highlands can run a spread offense now. CovCath was running the Highlands offense right at them. Ryle has converted to a form of the spread as well. It's just a new trend. When you have 4+ receivers on the field with a capable QB, and a line that gives him time, he is gonna find open people. You can't expect high school kids to cover that well (not saying you do.) Kids today are faster and skill positions have more value from top to bottom.

 

As we saw in the Dixie game, Highlands primarily rushes their 3 down lineman, which gives the QB time to make throws. While he did throw 3 INTs, he did expose the middle of the HHS defense with some good throws. In a rematch I'd expect more blitzes by the D. Would have liked to have seen Towles throw more than 13 times.

Good game by both teams. Way to hold ground at the end Birds. Thought the complection of the game turned midway in the 2nd quarter when Compton left the game after banging his head hard on the turf around mid field. Seemed to be a concussion. Then HHS fumbles. Compton was pounding CCH to that point. After that the game plan seemed to change and passing was not in synch tonight, give CCH the credit. Second half seemed like lets get out with this win and go on, instead of the usual full throttle attack. Just my opiion. Go Birds.

Great completion percentage for the limited number of passes he threw. Total HHS passing yards 185. First play from scrimmage, an 80 yard screen to Compton a RB. That means HHS had 105 total passing yards the remainder of the game. Towles is one of the best passing QBs in the state, if not the best in the state. His receiving trio is also one of, if not the best in the state. The HHS receivers have some blazing speed. Here's the WR passing stats that I have from memory. Gall 0 catches, 0 yards. Gold 1 catch, 10 yards. Sheehan 2 catches in the first half for 13 yards, a 25 yard TD catch and 3 or 4 passes, each 6-10 yards in the second half. Two of your top three receivers have 1 total catch for the entire game. Your third top receiver is making some catches, then suddenly no more passes. Repeatedly throughout the game, HHS receivers had single coverage, with the safety cheating to one side. I know the HHS QB is talented enough to pass the ball in their vicinity. My stats may be a little off, but my point isn't. Nobody can catch the ball if it isn't thrown to them. This game came down to a Hail Mary falling less than a foot short. It shouldn't have. Take the win and move on. 13 total HHS passes was on the verge of being unlucky. HHS players on both sides of the ball practice hard and play hard. As a HHS fan, be proud of the players that they got the job done. Don't bash your team with comments that this was their worst game.

It most certainly is!

I don't subscribe to "it was our worst game".......it wasn't their best but CCH was part of this equation as well. Certainly putting the ball on the ground three times and allowing a KO return for TD are uncharacteristic but it doesn't add up to "worst game".

 

A few observations..........I agree that Compton leaving the game changed the game offensively for HHS. Compton was very effective when he was in the game, conversely, Streeter and True both fumbled (I believe both inside the 20yd line?) and the HHS running game became very timid. The D spent a lot of time on the field and with a few injuries (depth issue) I honestly felt they looked a little tired as the game wore on.......... Overall not a great performance but nothing alarming here, still a W.

 

On the CCH side, there was very much to be impressed with. Bir showed great poise and overall the whole team & coaching staff did as well. They made adjustments when the running game was ineffective early and did not lose their faith in themselves and built off their successes as the game unfolded. Their passing game was very effective with quick lateral hits and crossing routes but INTs occurred when they went vertical. Thought they executed a solid game plan and showed a lot of heart. This is a good football team and they gave a good fight.........not quite there with HHS yet but have to feel good about this showing......I would.

Bir had all night to throw the ball tonight. Kudos to the o-line.

 

CovCath with 19 first downs to HHS 16. HHS 2/6 on 3rd down and CovCath was 5/11.

 

Because HHS didn't blitz..When you only have to block 3 guys you should have all night.

No surpizes here. Both teams ,gave it their all. Cov-Cath was down early and didn't quit . Both teams were doing some hard hitting , which also was no surprize.

 

Why didn't they stretch the field by throwing long to open up the running game ? IMO , Daniel Gold is one of the best recievers in the state , and only gets the ball thrown to him one time. Whats up with that ?

Honestly, isn't this what we all want to see when CovCath and Highlands meet? I only wish I could have been there for it, but I was at something much more important, as hard as that is to imagine.
