Did anyone see the score of Kentucky vs. #10 South Carolina, this past Saturday? Or the week before, did #7 Auborn really think that they would kick a field goal as time expired to beat Kentucky? Sometimes, the better team just has a rough outting.

 

I think we all would agree that a 7 point win is not pulling away from your opponent. And I believe most of us would agree that having 7 more points than your opponent has constitutes a victory. At the time of HHS score of their 27th point, I believe the HHS QB was 8-8 passing. Was he rushed some during pass plays throughout the game? yes. Was the short passing game there all night for HHS? yes. Did HHS attempt a pass longer than 25 yards? no. Was the deep pass available? Game film says yes, but 8-8 is great! Did Compton make big runs in the first half? yes. Did Sully and Compton play any of the second half? no. Did Gold play much of the second half? no. Was HHS driving on several possessions, only to fumble inside of enemy territory? yes.

 

They won against a team that is always pumped up against them. Every team plays there best against HHS!

 

They won fellow HHS fans. Enjoy Lofland's game winning interception, New's 70 yard interception, Abner's key interception, Compton's 80 yard TD catch, Sheehan's 25 yard TD catch, Towles 12 yard TD run, Streeter and True moving the ball for positive yardage, Gold's 45 yard kickoff return; Abner, Bruns, and Siedl's hard tackles, Weinel's kicking and punting, having Towle's as the QB, Meyer snapping the ball to perfection, the records of the Varsity, JV, and Freshman, etc.

 

The HHS fan bus to 20n10 has a diverse passenger assortment. This site has passengers that are on the bus one week, then off the next; those that stay on and ride no matter how smooth or bumpy; those that nothing would make them enjoy the ride, but thank goodness everybody will be on the bus in some fashion for the ride throughout the play offs.

 

Everybody stay in your seat. Be confident that the HHS players and coaches will keep driving the bus.

Kudos to Cov Cath. Coach Wirth and staff put together a good game plan, and the players executed well. The fumbles for Highlands are a serious problem, but let's put it in perspective. To this point in the season, we haven't put the ball on the ground this much. If the Birds suffer another game of fumbelitis, then it may be a larger concern. Time will tell.

Agreed. The penalties and fumbles need to be addressed and I believe they will. The injuries to the players is nothing new and they've been dealing with it all year so that should not be an issue at this point. It's the time when the senior leaders should step up and take over.

Love the positivity in your post. There were more good things that the Birds achieved on Friday night then negative so let us just focus on those and look forward to correcting the minor issues. Go Birds !!

I agree, if a team loses they can say a loss is a good thing if the team has time to recover. But if a team doesnt lose it's even better.

I think that part of what is being missed here is the fact that CovCath was in better game shape during the 4th quarter. I know that Highlands injuries had a lot to do w/ it, but how many full games has Highlands played this year? CovCath, w/ the exception of LexCath, Ryle and La Salle have had to play 4 quarter games w/ their starters. On top of that, they've had to make comebacks and score late in tight games in two others. This isn't an insult to Highlands players. Nobody can dispute that they are in great shape. It is just hard to replicate four quarters of all out football on the practice field. In the long run, this is good for the Birds.

If you don't think 5a opponents smell blood, you're mistaken. This game gave 5a a whole new meaning. This one is being talked about throughout the Commonwealth. Like Ryche said, time will tell if the Leadership on this team renews their intensity or starts believing the chatter. They are still the best team in 5a and quite possibly the state. But now they must overcome a more imposing dynamic of the game; the mental game.

One thing that has been apparent for a few years now is that Highlands comes into games with an extremely valuable mental edge: knowing that they are the kings in their division - and rightly so. Highlands has so managed to ingrain it in their players' minds to the point that you can visibly see it in the way the players carry themselves as they take the field, home and away. That's a great weapon for them to have.

 

Still, when their 4 years of undefeated football in KY is threatened to the point that a game comes down to its last play, it's got to shake that mental edge a little. I really don't think this team is focused on the chatter on this or any other website. They have been through enough to understand the mental aspects of the game, and I am confident the coaches are as well.

I understand what you're saying here, but who's to say that a nail-biter against Highlands may not encourage somebody out there to decide to step it up and bring their A-game when they may not have done so otherwise?

 

Take Cov Cath, for example. It's been bleedingly apparent in more than one game this year that they just didn't show up ready to play to their full potential...but you give them a real reason to want to win, which in this case was a huge rivalry game against Highlands, and they show up bringing their best performance of the year. Now then, suppose you have a team like Johnson Central, who's beaten Cov Cath handily the last two years straight, and they're looking at Cov Cath taking a game down to the final play with Highlands. You don't think that's going to give their players just a little more added incentive to leave it all on the field if they get a shot at the Bluebirds?
