We need to be talking about #24 from Newport. He just poured it on the Dogs today. Also 14, 33 and 23 were solid, and 22 just plays above the rim. Fun team to watch. I was sort of disappointed by Holmes. I really thought we's see a little more out of them.

No, when Holy Cross beat Lloyd for 9th Regional Baseball Title 1-0 in 1980. Holy Cross was under .500 that year made it out of Districts on Catchers interference call, and went on and upset the heavily favored Juggernauts in baseball in 1980.

Demarcko Foster is a talent, for sure. Newport plays so very well as a team. I see no selfishness in their game. And, not just today, it was the same thing all 3 games. Depth could be a factor come Saturday the 20th, but they have as good a shot as anyone at hardware collection at Rupp if they play the way they did for 3 straight games at BOKC. Impressive!!

Outstanding game by Newport! Holmes just flat out didn't play well but Newport had a whole lot to do with that, and I mean a whole lot!

 

Every loose ball, every missed shot, there was a Newport player there fighting to get the ball. Newport played as good as any NKy team I have seen play in years and they took it to Holmes by driving the lanes and hitting their open looks.

 

Congrats to the Wildcats and looking forward to seeing them play in Rupp on St. Patrick day March 17th vs the 2nd Region winner, which I think will be Christian County!

I was there for each game of this tournament and today Newport played so much better defense and they were very physical. The gameplan I believe was to not be intimidated and physically make the Dogs work for every shot. They did a great job of blocking out and played with tremendous confidence.

 

I couldnt believe the halftime score of 30 -13. I told my son that if they dont come out the first few minutes of the 2nd half and cut this lead under ten it will be over. Holmes played with more intensity to start the 2nd half but Newport nailed some big shots to keep the lead extended and the clock was Holmes' worst enemy.

 

Pittman was very disapointing in his antics on the court today. I noticed several times when he would give a guy an extra knee or added push. Not to mention his constant complaining to the refs.

 

Demarko Foster took it to Ricardo Johnson today and won the battle in the biggest 9th Region game of the year. He is so smooth and has such great body control. I thought the lack of depth for Newport was going to hurt them in the end but Russell did a good job of rotating Tucker in the game for different starters.

 

McDaniels had a great game and Luther's block was an ESPN highlight for sure. He erased that shot and all I saw from the far end was a long arm extended probably a foot over the rim and pin the ball. The Wilcats did a much better job of rebounding the basketball and not giving Holmes too many wide open 3 pointers.

 

Holmes was jacking up too many of those shots and should have chipped away at the lead instead of trying to get it all back with those bombs.

 

My heart wanted Newport to win but my head was saying Holmes was too talented. I hope the Wildcats can represent the 9th well.

14-Sizemore- played under great control at the guard spot and when the Holmes press was furious he did a pretty good job. He also knocked down some sweet Jumpers.

 

33- Cody Collins- he was huge today in his physical play on the defensive end and he took care of the ball well on offense.

 

23-McDanies- He can handle the ball so well for a 6'4 kid and he scored some big buckets today.

 

22- Luther- the Windex man today and his steal of the inbound pass and flush was sweet.

 

24-Foster- He worked Ric today !!!

Great recap! I believe that Luther's block was the key play in this game. At the time Holmes had went on a run and the momentum was starting to turn in their favor, if they make the shot the lead would have been cut to 10, but Luther ERASED those hopes real quick. Haven't seen anyone get off the floor as fast as he does in a long time.

No way, I dont consider it that big of an upset. Sure, Holmes was the favorite, but I don't think a lot of people are too surprised about Newport winning. Winning by 26, maybe...

 

Oh really? Can't recall a single person saying I wouldn't be surprised if Newport pulls the upset against defending state champ Holmes (with 2 of the top players in the state) after Newport got drilled in the districts by NCC.

From what I was told Ashland University (Ohio) is looking at him but he has yet to take a ACT test!

I know NKU has to be interested after watching him close in the 9th Region Tournament. But haven't heard anything official.

If he has the grades, he could be a very pleasant surprise to a D-2 or small D-1 program. He was the best player on the floor in every one of Newport's regional tourney games. Plus, he seems to have good bb smarts.
