Newport 60 Holmes 34

Featured Replies

While I would consider this an upset, I don't think it was "one of the biggest" in the Region or NKY's history. Newport was 28-5 going into this game.

Luther's block was big but with Newport up 12 in the 3rd qtr and Holmes on a bit of a run Tucker hit a 3 in the corner that just deflated Holmes. If he misses that shot, Holmes could have come down and put it within 10 or 9 and we could have had a whole different ballgame.

Congrats to the Wildcats! The job that Coach Russell did coaching this team needs to be acknowledge. Coach Russell has done something that no Newport coach has done in 50 years. His is taking his team to the Sweet 16. Great job Coach Russell, you deserve recognition for the great job you have done this year.:dancingpa

I don't care what anyone says. The best TEAM won. Newport plays like a team. They play TEAM BASKETBALL as well as any 9th Region Champ in recent memory. They kinda remind me of the St Henry team in 03'. They pass the ball very well. They handle pressure very well. They aren't scared of anyone.

Many of us knew Holmes had issues. But it took a game like today to just prove it. They didn't respond well to adversity. They played sluggish and then 2 guys even got "thugish". They weren't hitting from the outside and Elijiah was more worried about running his mouth rather than working the paint. Sorry to say it, but Ricardo and Jeremiah's shots seemed very flat today. Not sure if they were fatigued or just and off day.

The Dynasty is over....back to chaos in the 9th for a few years.

I know NKU has to be interested after watching him close in the 9th Region Tournament. But haven't heard anything official.

Apparently that probably isnt going to happen since he doesnt attend Holy Cross or Boone Co....or now Elliot County. LOL

I saw Bezold and McFarland in the front row and they had to be imagining him wearing black n yellow.

Tucker's shot was huge, it was right in front of me and he almost had it blocked. He has a slow release and if anyone other than that small guard for Holmes was defending it would have been put in the front row. It wasnt and it was a dagger. Sizemore is another one that can stick you with a dagger 3 during a game after making the defense work.

Newport was very patient in their offensive sets and didnt turn it over much even when Holmes was putting some intense pressure on them.

Only thing I will say about Tucker is that he really needs to stay focused and be there for his team. During one timeout he went over and sat on the bench by himself and I didnt think it looked good. He is a spark off the bench and he had a turnover and came out of the game. He needs to understand after him there really isnt anybody else so he needs to act more mature.

That may have been the biggest dose of Humble Pie ever served.

Yes, he does struggle with maturity.

Congrats to the Wildcats over the Bulldogs. Coach Russel has done a great job this year. Wish him well at Rupp.

The only bad thing about the game was the attitude of Pittman. I would have been embarassed to have him display that type of attitude publically. Glad to see that he was not recognized by the tourney as an all tourney team.

When was the last time Newport made the Sweet 16? I know it has been a longtime coming.
