I'm not sure why some people are surprised by the way Pittman acted.

 

Its nothing new, just a display of poor attitude and character, better yet sportsmanship. To throw a punch is just unexcpetable.

I just remembered this little nugget as I left the game and thought I'd share it.

 

I was waiting by the restrooms and I see many many dissappointed Holmes fans walking out of the arena. One little boy caught my eye. I would say he was 9 or 10 years old. He was walking out with his Holmes T-Shirt on and next to him was I assume his grandmother and his father. His grandmother was giving him a good lesson as they walked out of the arena. I overheard her say:

 

"now you listen to me young man. don't you ever ever act like that boy did down there. you take losing just like you taking winning. you act like you've been there before whether you win or lose."

 

and then she looked him in the eye and said "YOU UNDERSTAND ME??"

 

I walked out of that building absolutley satisfied with what I paid for tickets today.

Both teams looked flat in the first quarter and Newport led 12-11 after one.

 

At the half Newport led by 10 at 30-20 and the second half would be all Cats.

 

In the third quarter, Newport built a 42-24 lead but a 7-2 run to close the quarter by the Camels closed the game to 44-31.

 

Fourth quarter was all about runs. Newport led 56-38 with 4 mins left. With two minutes left, the score was Newport 60 Campbell Co 48 after a 10-4 run by the Camels. Like all good teams do though, Newport finished down the stretch. Foster got a couple and one's and the Cats closed the last two minutes with a 9-3 run.

 

Campbell Co simply couldn't contend with Newport's athleticism and got killed on the boards. Luther and Foster couldn't be stopped tonight.

 

After seeing the game tonight, I mentioned two things to the person I was with:

 

1. Newport is a very good team and will be a legit contender within the region.

2. Campbell Co isn't a very good team. They looked horrible offensively.

 

 

Nice meeting you Walter and nice call back in December.

Paint it how ever you want. Leaving the floor and not shaking hands whether it be 1 player or 15 players is a reflection of the team and coach. Over the past 3 years they had the respect of those that they beat, why not give it to the team that beat them? You win with class and lose with class and Holmes hasn't been taught this lesson. That's ashame!

Congrats to Newport. They now have 29 wins I believe so I would agree with others above ... this isn't even close to being the biggest upset ever in the ninth region. Newport obviously wasn't favored but I doubt anyone looked at this game and said they had no chance to win. I think virtually everyone thought this was an excellent match up.

 

Thanks to Holmes for a great run and bringing another state championship trophy to the ninth region.

 

As to the comments about player behavior, I think it proves even more what an incredible job Henley does at Holmes. It is hard enough to overcome obstacles from opponents and win but to also have to work around obstacles in your own locker room and win truly is an accomplishment.

Newport has always been a team that everyone said had talent but never put together a team. They have a team this season and its good to see. They aren't deep, but they are pretty athletic and can play with anyone so I think they aren't going to be a quick out. I'll be rooting for them at Rupp.

First off, let me congratulate the Newport Wildcats on the W. They absolutely took it to the Dogs, no matter how you try to spin it.

 

Bottom line, Holmes played their worst game in 3 years at the wrong time and they did it against a VERY GOOD Newport team, which led to a blowout. As someone said earlier....the dynasty is finally over.

 

Holmes never seemed to get in any rhythm. Shots were flat. Didn't box out. Weren't very physical at either end of the floor. But most importantly, got frustrated when things didn't go their way.

 

I will say this....that officiating was absolutely horrible both ways. A lot of no calls and kids were getting hammered down low. Despite this, Newport kept their composure and just kept playing ball. That was the difference.

 

Demarko Foster absolutely took it to Ricardo last night. Definetly not the outcome I pictured when I thought of how this seniors' season would end.

 

For those of you calling the Holmes TEAM classless for the antics of 1 or 2 players, let's remember these are still KIDS and that while I don't agree with the antics of those 1 or 2 players, emotions run high in 16 and 17 yr old boys. Don't let the post game activities be the final impression that you get of this team because all year everyone has talked about what a respectable group this TEAM was. Just because one or two players act out of line, doesn't mean the "coach and program" lacks class like some of you are saying.

 

After the game, I saw Holmes players congratulating Newport and especially saw Ricardo Johnson telling the Newport players "good luck at Rupp, win state." There was only one player who didn't shake the hands of the Newport kids and he was at the END OF THE LINE.

Holmes finished the game 9 for 45 (20%) from the field. I don't care who you are, you shoot that bad from the field and you're going to get blown out of the gym...especially against a team like Newport.

Let's hope the old addage is true, you can learn more from failure than you can from victory. It was a tough Holmes sideline on multiple levels.

 

I did admire several of their parents stepping up and telling them to take it like men!

No excuses for poor sportsmanship but just remember; they are still teenagers finding their way in life. Not saying it's right, just saying we are a little harder on the boys side than the ladies sometimes. Hopefully they will grow up and have marvelous futures.

Big congratulations to the Newport Wildcats! Love your teamwork!

It is disheartening to see the comments about the Holmes team in general. I don't feel we can label the team as having a total lack of class and poor sportsmanship due the the acts of 1 or 2. I did see them leave for the locker room but other than maybe those 1 or 2 I would like to think it was not meant in poor sportsmanship but a very upsetting and confusing moment for many of those young men. Please don't take one moment in time and label a team that has overcome adversity and accomplished what they have in the last 3 years.

 

Coach Henley has done some amazing things with this group of players, this just was not the night for them. Newport was clearly the better team on the floor and for that they should be congratulated!! They will represent the 9th region and as other teams supported Holmes we will support Newport in their quest.

It is even going on in with their 7th grade team. After Ockerman beat them in the regular season one of their guards gave the Ockerman crowd the middle finger. Then in the championship game the same kid was cussing at a parent in the stands. The program does not know how to lose with class.

Please don't say the program doesn't know how to lose with class because of 1 kid. There is more to a "program" than one player.

 

Anyone that follows the Holmes program knows that Coach Henley and his staff are first class and he has really changed the face of Holmes basketball.

 

To lump all of these KIDS in together because of one incident is very disrespectful to the players and parents of Holmes' team that have worked hard to uphold their image both on and off the court.

 

I also don't think it's appropriate to sit here and bash a SEVENTH GRADER in a public forum, whether his antics were right or wrong.
