Absolutely. I love chick fights. :D

Go in person, its not like you have to go several times, its just the one time. I found this car in Indy and wanted to go buy it, Momma said buy one local...I said "I only have to make the one trip and I got my car" She agree and we bought it. Good Luck.

I drove 4 hours there and 4 hours back in the same night to ask. His response, "I don't guess I have any major objections." He wasn't kidding and we never had a great relationship, but it meant the world to my wife. Plus I knew I did my part.

Hop in the car.

Showed my girlfriend this thread...she goes, "Not saying it needs to be anytime soon, or you for that matter...but my dad better be getting asked" lol.

It could be worse. You could be planning to ask him only on Sundays between 2-5pm and only one adult allowed at a time.

Text him.

:lol::lol:

Go see him, the worst that can happen is he punches you in the mouth. LOL

I didn't ask my father-in law and we get along just fine. My wife and I took her parents to dinner along with her sisters and their husbands. My wife out of nowhere says oh by the way we are flying to Jamaica next month and getting married. My mother inlaw dropped her fork and my father in law said Great ! Can I get one of those rolls? LOL

I'm sure Hallmark makes an E-Card for that...

 That is what I was going to say.

Let me put it this way son. If you don't have the time to make the trip to ask him face to face for his daughter's hand in marriage, then he's probably not going to think you have time for his daughter.

There are no do-overs in this situation. Marriage is a huge commitment. Show him you're the man for such a commitment. Tell him you need to come up and talk to him and you don't want your girlfriend to know about it. He'll figure it out, sure, but that doesn't lessen the occassion, and he will only appreciate it more.

I did not ask my father-in-law for permission to marry my wife and my son-in-law didn't ask my permission to marry my daughter . I did not feel slighted in the least not to be asked . My daughter was an adult and could make her own decisions . In my opinion it is old fashioned and outdated ,and we live in The United States not Saudi Arabia or Pakistan .

Ask him! PH did and it was great...well, for me, not him. He got the "how you gonna take care of her, what are your plans for the future, you know that she is spoiled, she can be hard headed, are you really sure that you want to do this, you can always change your mind, she is my little girl and if you ever do anything to upset her you will have me to deal with, etc, etc". A little question turned into about a two hour talk LOL LOL. In all fairness, I was an only child at that time and me being a girl, well, lets just say that my parents were not ready for me to leave the nest yet. My brother arrived a month and a day after PH and I were married....I always say that Nov brought me two miracles...PH as my husband and Rob as my brother!

It does not sound like she lives at home and is older than I was. This might help the situation a lot! I did not have a clue of what living on my own was like. I had a little job, however, all that money was mine LOL...living out on your own is much different!

HHS Dad is right. I agree with those who are saying do it in person, and it's OK to be nervous, it's part of the deal.

Remember this, it is not for you, it is a show of respect for your wife and her father. Although you will still likely marry her without his permission, and you don't really need his permission, you will be showing him a tremendous amount of respect by asking. If the word permission hangs you up, ask for his blessing, as somebody suggested above.

The key is that you will be letting him know she is important to you, that you are making a lifelong commitment to her and that you are serious about doing this right. Let him know that you know she is precious and that you will provide for her and love her forever.

I was in my early 20s when I married and I didn't ask my father in law for his daughters hand. I thought at the time that I didn't need his permission and I was a man, etc. etc. If I had it to do over again, I would have definitely shown him that respect and done it the right way. I never knew he harbored any ill thoughts about it because we get along great, but one day about 10 years later he made a backhanded comment about me not asking. I could tell it insulted him and I regretted it because I love the man.

Point being, although it may not seem important in our society today, it probably is important to him, even if it seems outdated. When you marry, you are married to her whole family and hopefully for a lifetime. Better to start off on the right foot and give yourself every advantage. Hitting it off with the inlaws is a really good first step.

I asked my wifes parents together about 6 montsh before I even asked my wife. It should be done with the father at the very least. If there's distance involved I say a phone call is acceptable, NO EMAIL NO TEXT.
