Asking her father's permission...

Featured Replies

So I'll be asking my gf to marry me over the Christmas holiday, I know it's proper to ask the father for his daughter's hand in marriage.

Personally, I feel this is antiquated and unnecessary seeing how women are no longer considered the property of their fathers until they marry, but I don't make the rules.

I have been told by my gf that I should probably ask/talk to him before popping the actual question.

He lives 2 hours away and it's not exactly easy to make the trip up their. I have no time during the week, so I would need to go sometime this weekend (while keeping it secret from her) if I were to ask him in person.

I would feel much more comfortable doing this sort of thing via e-mail, but I'm not sure how acceptable that is. Not to mention, it's kind of awkward e-mailing or calling him up to schedule some kind of drop-in without giving away what I'm coming there for.

Any advice/tips on how I should go about doing this?

From the immortal Tom Lehrer:

I hold your hand in mine, dear,

I press it to my lips.

I take a healthy bite

From your dainty fingertips.

My joy would be complete, dear,

If you were only here,

But still I keep your hand

As a precious souvenir.

I just took her and didn't even think about asking her dad-my Uncle.

I called and asked my wife's mother and brother for permission (her dad is deceased). I was more nervous asking her mother than I was asking my wife. She lives in North Carolina, so obviously I could not come up with a good enough lie to meet up with her in person, but I would have done it that way if I could have.

I received this email yesterday and thought I would share it...

The World's Shortest Fairy Tale….Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?' The girl said, 'NO!' And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and raced cars and went fishing and hunting and played golf a lot and drank beer and scotch and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted. THE END

JJ best of luck to you.

I didn't ask but then again we were in our late 20's and both had been on our own for over 10 years.

Musk, I thought that was you in the picture.

Lol, not far off. I have more facial hair now, though.

I like the texting idea :D

Haha you would.

It would show great respect if you ask in person----your future relationship will be much better for it.

Or worse if dad does not like you and he says no and you go ahead and ask anyhow.:D
