December 17, 200817 yr It's not going to be as bad as you think!! I PROMISE!! I don't know how long you have been together but people don't just meet and get married in just a few months. They're already expecting this. Take him/them out to eat and CELEBRATE!! As a father with a daughter I like eccheer idea! I to can tell you also that dear old Dad has a pretty good idea what his daughter is hoping/wishing for, as believe it or not most young ladies talk to there Dads more than you think! Be a man about it and talk to her Dad face to face! The worse thing that Dear Old Dad is going to tell you is, "If you ever physically hurt her, I will physically hurt you!"
December 17, 200817 yr Well this should make you feel better.....FF didn't know that was even supposed to occur. I don't think it happens nearly as much now ( maybe it does, just didn't happen here lol). I think its a very nice gesture but like in my case, I would rather have my mom asked than my mother b/c I am not close to my father. So each case should be handled differently. I think that if he is far away, just make a phone call.
December 17, 200817 yr Man Law: If a young man asks permission to marry your daughter, you should immediately punch him in the mouth. As soon as he recovers, answer yes or no...
December 17, 200817 yr Man Law: If a young man asks permission to marry your daughter, you should immediately punch him in the mouth. As soon as he recovers, answer yes or no... I swear...if Kevin James has anyone closer in this world to a clone of himself than you, I'll be shocked.
December 17, 200817 yr I'm 34. I asked my wife's dad and am SO GLAD I did! He got more excited than me I think. It was pretty funny. I would do it in person but that is me. It's the biggest question you are ever going to ask so I would make time to do it right. That's just me though. I also have a five year old daughter and it would mean a lot more to me (and make me feel a little better) if the guy that's going to marry my daughter at least had the guts/respect to ask me. You have to remember that most dad's have been in that spot that you are in right now. I'd contact a family member you trust the most not to say anything and make sure he is going to be around. I know I will melt the day it happens to me as a father then probably follow the man law Seriously put your self in his shoes. If somebody takes the time to drive 2 hours out of their way (4 hrs round trip) then they have shown me a TON of respect and that will be there forever.

December 17, 200817 yr She wants you to ask him, right? You want to spend the rest of your life with her. What's a few hours of your time to make her happy and to earn the respect of your future father in law? He'll pick up on the time issue for you...it'll make how important his daugther is to you more clear. You only get one chance to do this right...which in case you haven't figured this out means HER way.
December 17, 200817 yr I think "asking" dad is a marvelous way to begin your journey together. The respect that both her parents will have for you will begin at the top! Driving two hours is a minor thing for the benefits and the joy that it will bring all on down the road. Congratulations!!
December 17, 200817 yr If your girlfriend wants you to ask her father, then you better ask her father. How's that for a preview of marriage?
December 17, 200817 yr Ask in person. Your worth as a man will be highly elevated in her father's and mother's eyes. Also, future wives are usually overwelmed by this act of respect.
December 17, 200817 yr Having done this a couple of times, I agree that it should be done in person. A neutral site would be optimal, such as a restaurant. As for asking his permission, I agree that it is kind of out-dated. I opted with asking for his blessing. As I told him, I was going to marry his daughter, with or without his permission, but it would mean the world to me if he would give his blessing. Be prepared for an intense conversation. He will probably want to talk about the future as far as employment, what marriage means as far as commitment, what he expects of you as a son-in-law, etc. Be sure to listen respectfully and answer all questions honestly. Look him in the eye. Show him that you are taking this very important step seriously. Good luck, young man. I wish you nothing but the best in this, and may God have mercy on your soul. How has this worked out for you???

I'm telling you. I haven't laughed that hard in a while. Priceless...
