Football season too long!

Featured Replies

I don't care what any other state does, in most states they have a shorter basketball season but you do not here anyone in KY wanting to shorten basketball season. Football is fine and we are sending more and more kids to go play college football. Keep it the way it is. Football is great in KY and we will have great games this weekend while everyone else is at home not watching football.

It's much too late for high school football.

I like the way the schedule is set up the next two years. That will help some. I still think Thanksgiving weekend is the PERFECT time to wrap up the season.

Basketball should be June, December, January, February and March.

Football should be July, August, September, October and November.

I'm sure the baseball folks appreciate you giving them April and May.

Is there a reason why KY HS football goes until the Middle of December? Why the bye week? OH has been finished for 2 weeks.

We save the best for last in the USA?

Eh, maybe it would encourage them to play a REAL sport... ;) :thumb:

Way too long!!! Start a week earlier and thank goodness they are doing away with the bye week! I never liked that concept...

Attendance at the sweet 16 has everything to do with the setup/social activity/indoor climate of Rupp Arena-Hyatt/Raddison.

Why did they stop alternating the sweet 16 with Freedom hall?

Because UK hoops fans somehow thought it was equivalent to supporting UofL. Plus, many, many UK fans somehow have bought so deeply into the UK-UofL rivalry that they have convinced themselves Louisville is a foreign country. Especially folks from Eastern Kentucky.

We have plenty of these type threads. The facts are, football season is not to long. I personally have given up on the playoff format, and will just watch what ever format they use. But, the only argument for shorting the season is for basketball. And, I personally don't care for the thought process that football is affected because of basketball season.

Basketball teams play games virtually all year long, winter season, AAU season, and summer open gyms. Football is restricted on when they can start practice, how long they can play, when they can play, and when they can practice. Basketball has 25 games in the winter season, and 30 in AAU, and 100 in summer open gyms. Football only has a 10 game season and 5 game playoffs. I really can't see an argument to limit the football season.

Now, for the people who say this is a basketball state. I hear that all the time, and it may be true in some areas, but in my area, we have 500-1000 people at virtually every football game, and 100-200 at any basketball game. I am pretty sure that is the case for most of EKY, NEKY, NKY, and the Louisville area.

15 games, for some, and 10-12 for most, is not to much as far as I am concerned.

I'm not for shortening the football season. And I don't really mind the "bye" week as that often allows teams a little time to heal. And as far as OH & IN goes, do we really want to emulate states that have produced such football gems as the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns, and the Indiana Hoosiers???

As for the #4 seeds...well, Simon-Kenton is the poster child for why allowing four teams in per district makes sense. It give us a chance to crown the team playing the best ball at the end of the season by allowing for the "late bloomers" (like the Pioneers) to go deep in the playoffs. Right now, they are playing better than anyone else (except perhaps Trinity...we'll know soon enough)...

As far as I am concerned it isn't long enough. Basketball bores me outside of a few instances and as such in my mind should be subordinate to football.

If it is too cold, go home, its football season.

Tell'em

I am just confused as to how this is even a discussion. I have never heard complaints regarding the length of a high school season in any sport. I never complained when I played nor have I heard a single current player complain that a season was too long. To the contrary, most players will tell you it goes too fast. If you are a parent, enjoy it. It never comes back. If you are a player, enjoy it. You will never have this much fun again. Even if you play college ball, it is more of a job than pure fun. Come on guys, let's discuss something more pertinent and interesting than if we need to shave off a few weeks in the football season. Geez!

Great post doc. I could not agree more with you. Thank you.

Well, thank you for the compliment. I just don't know where the past 23 years have gone. Every Friday night, when the pre-game speeches are given, I want to suit up. I honestly don't know where the time went. Baseball is the same way, I miss the competition. I still play softball, but it just doesn't bring back the same thrill and emotion as being a teenager. Maybe it isn't as fun because everything hurts so bad when the games are done now.

I think the legit points made earlier in this thread are valid. The difficulty is fitting everything in. You are right, player, parent, coach, administrator, enjoy it. The points about it being too long are more for those sports that the overlap is hurting. How can the kids, coaches or schools get a good start at Basketball due to the lenght of football. Same goes for Baseball due to the lenght of Basketball. The points made earlier about other states is that they seem to have better overlap than what is happening in KY. So, I disagree that this isn't pertinent. It's certainly pertinent to those affected.
