Football season too long!

Featured Replies

We have plenty of these type threads. The facts are, football season is not to long. I personally have given up on the playoff format, and will just watch what ever format they use. But, the only argument for shorting the season is for basketball. And, I personally don't care for the thought process that football is affected because of basketball season.

Basketball teams play games virtually all year long, winter season, AAU season, and summer open gyms. Football is restricted on when they can start practice, how long they can play, when they can play, and when they can practice. Basketball has 25 games in the winter season, and 30 in AAU, and 100 in summer open gyms. Football only has a 10 game season and 5 game playoffs. I really can't see an argument to limit the football season.

Now, for the people who say this is a basketball state. I hear that all the time, and it may be true in some areas, but in my area, we have 500-1000 people at virtually every football game, and 100-200 at any basketball game. I am pretty sure that is the case for most of EKY, NEKY, NKY, and the Louisville area.

15 games, for some, and 10-12 for most, is not to much as far as I am concerned.

I agree. Good post. :thumb:

No It's not!

Not only is this season too long its less enjoyable due to the 6 classes. How nice would it be to see NCC and Beechwood battling it out to see who goes to the semis or to the finals? How nice would it be to have Highlands and Johnson Central battling Boyle and LexCath?

You can pencil Beechwood into the final game each and every year. That's not very exciting.

It is if your a Beechwood fan.

I like the way you think. :thumb:

Is there a reason why KY HS football goes until the Middle of December? Why the bye week? OH has been finished for 2 weeks.

Ohio has been finished because the stadiums where they play the finals are under several feet of snow and won't be playable again until the August thaw.;)

Every team? How many league games and then how long for the playoffs?
Every team. Nine regular season games. The bottom line is every team is guaranteed ten games and the winner of the 15th game in each of the five classes is a state champion. Teams usually play in five to seven conference games.

I have to agree. If it's too cold or wet, stay home!

It's football and the elements are part of the game.

2008 attendance for five Indiana state high school final games = 56,050 (11,210/game)

2007 attendance for six Kentucky state high school final games = 46,620 (7,770/game)

Apparently many Kentucky fans do just stay home. Eliminating the open week, and playing the finals a a week or two earlier could not hurt attendance.

This is the best post I've read since joining BGP's in August. You the man, Ram!

Has nothing to do with basketball, at least for me. Wrestling season has started. If our football team was fortunate enough to make it to this weekend which they didn't and probably won't for a long time. Add a few days off, then train the body to get into wrestling shape, it's January. It's hard enough to get the linemen out for wrestling because of some brainwashed idea that they should be bulking up and pushing iron instead of wrestling.

The season is too long in terms of overlapping into winter sports seasons not in the number of games but how late the season rolls. The elements are not an issue. I just think they should either start winter sports later or shorten the football season a bit.

I just used basketball, because that is normally the main reason for shortening football season. But, my argument still holds true, most teams only play 10-12 games. I don't see how there is an argument about that being to many. Football only plays one game per week, and that can not change. So, I don't see how we can have the season end any earlier, unless we start the football season before school starts, and I don't see that as a valid alternative.

I like other sports, but when it comes to making room for other sports, the argument is always raised to shorten football season. Basketball as I said has 150 games a year, and can practice anytime, except the dead period which no sport can practice. Baseball has the spring school season, the summer season with Legion ball, and now has a fall season that directly affects kids that what to play baseball and football. Baseball players can play well over 100 games a year, and can practice anytime they want.

Football has anywhere from 10-15 games a year, and has limitations on when they can practice, how long they can practice, only can have two scrimmages, only can play 10 regular season games, only can have 5 playoff games, and can not have practice again until the designated time. But, people always want to shorten football season.

I admittedly do not know much about wrestling season. But, my proposal is to limit the winter basketball season to 15 regular season games then play the tournaments. Limit Baseball season to 15 games, then play the tournaments. That will give both sports at the minimum of the same number of games at a football team that makes it to the State Championship game. With that done, we can move basketball to January 1, and baseball to May 1. Move wrestling to February 1.

That would solve this problem, and football would have their 10-12 games, baseball and basketball would still have more regular season games and still be able to have year around games.

I don't have anything against football, played myself. It's just that they stand out when it comes to fall sports. Point taken about the number of competitions compared to other sports. Wrestling is a winter sport with State ending 3rd weekend of Feb. Getting rid of the bye week in football helps but I have been in favor of pushing wrestling back a few weeks, maybe Jan. 1 and ending the season in the last week. Wrestling is allowed 17 or 18 dates, which could result in 35-55 matches in a season.

The winter sports have to remain somewhat in conjunction with boundary states because of interstate competition not to mention the other logistics involved in the KHSAA.
