Football season too long!

Featured Replies

All the major sports are affected by the other major sports. It has gotten harder for a player to play baseball, basketball, and football. It can be done, but it is harder. If a player plays all three sports, he will miss spring football for baseball, he will miss football camps because of summer baseball or open gym in basketball. He will miss fall baseball because of football, he will miss early basketball practice because of football. He will miss summer baseball because of open gym in basketball. He will miss weight lifting because of baseball and basketball. He will miss 7 on 7 because of baseball.

The simple fact is that high school athletes have to choose what they want. They can play baseball, they can play basketball, they can play football, and they can play all three. But, to think that a player can be present at every event for all three sports is just unreadable.

Baseball now has spring school baseball, summer baseball leagues, fall baseball season, winter clinics, and showcases. Basketball has winter school season, spring traveling teams, summer open gyms, and basketball camps. Football has fall school season, winter weight lifting, spring practice, 7 on 7 scrimmages, summer camps, and preseason workouts. All three sports are now virtually year around.

That is the way it has become. I think that is way many of the players want it. If a player only plays one sport, he wants to spend time all year to get better. That has been proven by the number of players that now have personal trainers during the off season, and go to clinics on their own during the off season.

You can have it any way you want it, one sport, two sports, or three sports, but you can't have it all.

I would disagree that that is what the players want, it's what the players have as no choice. Let's face it, we enjoyed the opportunity to play all 3 sports and still have a chance to enjoy our HS year. For today's HS athlete, he has to commit to 1 or 2 sports and that's about all that he can do.

So what does today's athlete get for his year-round effort to work on that sport? If you factor in "inflation" of colleges that offer scholarships versus 25 years ago, IMO the same % of athletes are getting opportunities to play post HS. Thus, all the work just allows you to play that one sport, versus them getting the opportunity to participate in all 3.

And then you have Baseball..... Baseball already ends after the school year. So when would you propose to play the current school years baseball schedule?

If you really wanted to play a good solid baseball schedule, baseball should run in the fall, you'd start just like football and play August and September and most of October with few rainouts. But we know that's not possible so you have to run it to after school ends.

Well, thank you for the compliment. I just don't know where the past 23 years have gone. Every Friday night, when the pre-game speeches are given, I want to suit up. I honestly don't know where the time went. Baseball is the same way, I miss the competition. I still play softball, but it just doesn't bring back the same thrill and emotion as being a teenager. Maybe it isn't as fun because everything hurts so bad when the games are done now.

Too bad they don't have the Bluegrass Leagues anymore Doc. I remember my Dad telling stories about his years playing in that league and it must have been something.

We have plenty of these type threads. The facts are, football season is not to long. I personally have given up on the playoff format, and will just watch what ever format they use. But, the only argument for shorting the season is for basketball. And, I personally don't care for the thought process that football is affected because of basketball season.

Basketball teams play games virtually all year long, winter season, AAU season, and summer open gyms. Football is restricted on when they can start practice, how long they can play, when they can play, and when they can practice. Basketball has 25 games in the winter season, and 30 in AAU, and 100 in summer open gyms. Football only has a 10 game season and 5 game playoffs. I really can't see an argument to limit the football season.

Now, for the people who say this is a basketball state. I hear that all the time, and it may be true in some areas, but in my area, we have 500-1000 people at virtually every football game, and 100-200 at any basketball game. I am pretty sure that is the case for most of EKY, NEKY, NKY, and the Louisville area.

15 games, for some, and 10-12 for most, is not to much as far as I am concerned.

Preach on brother!! I am with you. :dancingpa

AMEN from the back pew!!! :thumb::thumb::thumb:

I'm sure the baseball folks appreciate you giving them April and May.

Not really. How about spring football, that just so happens to pop up during baseball season? Some coaches make it "mandatory" for baseball players to attend, therefore taking even more practice/game time from the baseball season. Hey, I'm for kids playing whatever and as many sports as they want. I just think somebody (KHSAA) needs to do a better job of balancing their seasons.

It is all about choice. And we live in an era where the kids have lots of choices. The decision to play one sport over another is a tough one. But learning to make these choices/sacrifices is just another learning experience. I think expecting a youth to play three sports, make good grades, have a social life is alot of pressure. Sure, there are some athletes that can do it...but how many actually choose this? I know several that are expected to play because they always have...multiple sports are alot easier at the middle school or elementary school level. The goal being to expose them to different programs, see where they excel or what their passion is for. My son plays two sports at the high school level. Football and Track. When he was younger he did baseball and basketball also, now he enjoys some "down time" and is better for it.

Summer baseball anyone?!? The kids serious about baseball can play as much as 9 months a year.

Most of the schools I know do not allow a coach to mandate that a kid playing a spring sport participate in the 2 weeks of spring football practice.

Every team? How many league games and then how long for the playoffs?

They have 9 regular season games and a 6 game playoff. At least that's how it used to be.

This entire thread is bordering on blasphemy! Football season can NEVER be too long!

Of course the football season is too long. That is why they should take the top 2 teams instead of 4. I know that Simon Kenton is a number 4 seed and is in the state championship game (and I hope they win). But short of cutting out the bye week (which I am in favor of) and starting a week earlier, that is the only solution that makes sense to me. The teams that are in the state championship games are almost playing a pro football like number of games. Plus the players that play basketball are getting such a late start.

Well I understnad your arguement but I think its pretty weak. What about Basketball players who have to start late for baseball season. Majority of the time anyway its not how you start, but how you finish.

I really feel old with your post!:creepy: This is the first post towards me that says ...."I remember my dad talking about that....." Wow, great dose of my age. Just think, I had almost gotten over the fact that 41 is just 3 months away.
