Football season too long!

It is all about choice. And we live in an era where the kids have lots of choices. The decision to play one sport over another is a tough one. But learning to make these choices/sacrifices is just another learning experience. I think expecting a youth to play three sports, make good grades, have a social life is alot of pressure. Sure, there are some athletes that can do it...but how many actually choose this? I know several that are expected to play because they always have...multiple sports are alot easier at the middle school or elementary school level. The goal being to expose them to different programs, see where they excel or what their passion is for. My son plays two sports at the high school level. Football and Track. When he was younger he did baseball and basketball also, now he enjoys some "down time" and is better for it.

I disagree, we have taken the "choice" away from them because they can't play all 3 sports and still be a successful student.

It's not too long.

This entire thread is bordering on blasphemy! Football season can NEVER be too long!

I agree. They have started this thread in the basketball forum and it is going against us!!!!

How is letting them have everything a choice?

We have plenty of these type threads. The facts are, football season is not to long. I personally have given up on the playoff format, and will just watch what ever format they use. But, the only argument for shorting the season is for basketball. And, I personally don't care for the thought process that football is affected because of basketball season.

Basketball teams play games virtually all year long, winter season, AAU season, and summer open gyms. Football is restricted on when they can start practice, how long they can play, when they can play, and when they can practice. Basketball has 25 games in the winter season, and 30 in AAU, and 100 in summer open gyms. Football only has a 10 game season and 5 game playoffs. I really can't see an argument to limit the football season.

Now, for the people who say this is a basketball state. I hear that all the time, and it may be true in some areas, but in my area, we have 500-1000 people at virtually every football game, and 100-200 at any basketball game. I am pretty sure that is the case for most of EKY, NEKY, NKY, and the Louisville area.

15 games, for some, and 10-12 for most, is not to much as far as I am concerned.

You are the man and i agree with you all the way.:ylsuper:

I am just confused as to how this is even a discussion. I have never heard complaints regarding the length of a high school season in any sport. I never complained when I played nor have I heard a single current player complain that a season was too long. To the contrary, most players will tell you it goes too fast. If you are a parent, enjoy it. It never comes back. If you are a player, enjoy it. You will never have this much fun again. Even if you play college ball, it is more of a job than pure fun. Come on guys, let's discuss something more pertinent and interesting than if we need to shave off a few weeks in the football season. Geez!

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The people complaining never played sports I bet.

Lets just extend football season and shorten basketball season. I would love that.:dancingpa

OK, look! I mistated what I was trying to say. My apologies for the 2nd time. And yes, I did play sports, HS, College and beyond.

I initially blamed football because they are first out of the block when school starts and yes they extend much longer than other fall sports. I love football, wanted to double sport in college, but in DI it was tough enough for one.

I know winter sports started early this year or so it seems. They (KHSAA) are the culprits, not the sport. Point taken, and agreed. There is a big overlap in seasons.

BTW, I am not a basketball fan.

I would disagree that that is what the players want, it's what the players have as no choice. Let's face it, we enjoyed the opportunity to play all 3 sports and still have a chance to enjoy our HS year. For today's HS athlete, he has to commit to 1 or 2 sports and that's about all that he can do.

So what does today's athlete get for his year-round effort to work on that sport? If you factor in "inflation" of colleges that offer scholarships versus 25 years ago, IMO the same % of athletes are getting opportunities to play post HS. Thus, all the work just allows you to play that one sport, versus them getting the opportunity to participate in all 3.

Don't include me in this "we" stuff. Nothing requires a kid to only play one or two sports. He/she can play three sports if chosen, they just may not be as successful in any one sport as the player that dedicates him or herself to only one sport and works on getting better at that sport year around. It's a choice thing and nothing other than a choice thing. If you like playing multiple sports, go for it. But to impose rules that in effect penalize the kids that only want to excel in one sport for the benefit of those that want to play multiple sports is in my opinion wrong.

I'm with you!!! :dancingpa

Here's what you need to think about before you shorten football...how many winter sports pay the bills. The answer, none! You'll find a few basketball teams that generate a profit and a few football teams that don't, but in general, football pays the bills. Why would you want to cut a week off of your (potentially) only revenue grossing sport?

That theory is all fine and dandy, but at most schools, the kids who are playing all three sports tend to be the best athletes in the building, and are almost always needed by the coaches of the three respective sports to be successful. It's not as cut and dried as you put it. Surely you don't think Highlands is as good as it can absolutely be in boys basketball and baseball, do you?

Sorry, but at most schools in the state, boys basketball is the chief revenue sport, and that's why they won't shorten the season (even though I see no reason for some teams to play as many as 35-40 games in a season).

Football produces twice the revenue as Basketball in Central Ky.
