Football season too long!

Featured Replies

Has nothing to do with basketball, at least for me. Wrestling season has started. If our football team was fortunate enough to make it to this weekend which they didn't and probably won't for a long time. Add a few days off, then train the body to get into wrestling shape, it's January. It's hard enough to get the linemen out for wrestling because of some brainwashed idea that they should be bulking up and pushing iron instead of wrestling.

The season is too long in terms of overlapping into winter sports seasons not in the number of games but how late the season rolls. The elements are not an issue. I just think they should either start winter sports later or shorten the football season a bit.

No matter the sport whether it is basketball or wrestling, this just sounds like a selfish post. If a lineman, or any position player wants to play it is one thing but to limit their games on hopes of getting them out for another sport is absurd. Let the kids play and NO FOOTBALL IS NOT TOO LONG. If it interferes with another sport by a week or two, so be it, the only people complaining are the coaches of these sports because the kids aren't wanting their football season to end so they can jump to another sport.

I believe basketball (don't know much about wrestling) could solve a lot of its problems if it would start practice November 15 and start playing games / Tourneys on December 15.

Starting basketball practice on October 15 and finishing the season on March 15 is more absurd to me than football being finished the first weekend of December.

Don't mean to sound selfish, sorry. Not my intention. Perhaps should have rephrased the thread or put a bit more thought before posting. I am not picking on football but I'd bet that if Football was a winter sport and they were missing their playmakers for the first 2-3 games, I would think that they would have something to say.

My point is this, other states manage to mininmize the overlapping of sports. Seems like KY could do it too. That's all. Actually, I should be complaining to the KHSAA. I think they started wrestling earlier this year.

Every team. Nine regular season games. The bottom line is every team is guaranteed ten games and the winner of the 15th game in each of the five classes is a state champion. Teams usually play in five to seven conference games.

And then you have Baseball..... Baseball already ends after the school year. So when would you propose to play the current school years baseball schedule?

For us die hards football season is to short!!! For those youth who want to play other sports and feel the length of the season negatively impacts their ability to perform well in other areas...to bad! Learning to make tough choices or make sacrifices is all part of growing up!

Good post, and dead on! :thumb:

Guys, 20,000 people attend each Sweet 16 session. People go to the Sweet 16 who haven't had a rooting interest there in 35 years, and they go every year. The only people who go to the football finals are people who have a rooting interest, and a few diehards (myself included). Whether you like it or not, hoops draws waaaaayyyyyy more water, and it will always be that way.

I understand that, and this is a different argument, but people go to the Sweet 16 that don't go to that many high school basketball games. Just like a lot of people watch the Super Bowl and the World series that don't normally watch football or baseball.

The finals, yes more people go to the Sweat 16 then the Football Finals. But, in many areas of the state basketball attendance dwarfs football attendance.

There are a couple of reasons for this and KY being a basketball state isn't one of them.

1. Indoor

2. Social Activity rather than avid enthusists.

3. Tradition

4. Perfect setup of Rupp Arena being connected to the Hyatt, back to the social aspect.

5. Did I mention it is indoors and warm.

6. People can drink.

:thumb:Sometimes understanding one's words is harder to do when reading, rather than listenind to them in person.

It wouldn't matter if it was indoors. The fact that Kentucky (UK, that is) is traditionally terrible in football is why the HS football finals will never dream of measuring up to the Sweet 16.

I thought about the length the other night during our game against Male. Week one it was extremely hot, I know I lost some water weight due to the heat. Then to sit in the stands when it's 20 degrees, and I can't find enough to wear. I'm glad the bye week is gone, but eliminating one week won't make much difference over the long haul, it is December, it's supposed to be cold.

Attendance at the sweet 16 has everything to do with the setup/social activity/indoor climate of Rupp Arena-Hyatt/Raddison.

Why did they stop alternating the sweet 16 with Freedom hall?

I don't know what the attendance numbers were while it was held in Louisville, but I guarantee it was much lower.
