Judging from their performances on their two long road trips, I would say that Central doesn't travel the distance very well. There is no reason to think that a team that played Manual and Highlands to the final minutes should get romped at Johnson Central and barely squeak by at Paducah Tilghman.

 

Practically at home this week, I suspect fans will see the real Central on Friday afternoon. Whether that's enough to win, we'll see.

There is no reason to think that a team that can't handle a long bus ride will handle a very physical Belfry team regardless of where the game is played.

 

Maybe Louisville Central expected to roll over Johnson Central and Paducah Tilghman, but I really don't think that the bus ride played a role in those games. A long bus ride will contribute to a team fading in the second half because of fatigue but that is not what happened in Paintsville. The domination started with Johnson Central's first possession.

 

If Central is really as good as some people believe, then maybe their coaching staff simply underestimated some opponents and did not put enough time into preparing their team. Belfry came to play every week this season and nobody came within 16 points of beating the Pirates.

I say Belfry's deliberate style of play will simply wear down LC.

If you are a fan of the program and would like to see them win, that great. If you are routing for the kids because nobody seems to follow them, thats fine too, but that IS sorta a pity approach.

 

 

I am pulling for them because they have put in years of hard work and now it is paying off...even after years of having a not so great program. No pity about it!!! I am proud of these young men. I don't feel sorry for them.

I have a questing about Louisville Central. How are they playing in class 3A with right at 1000 students in their school. That is what some 5A schools have.

I like to think that EVERY team puts in years of hard work... sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't. Thats the way the game goes. Any given Friday....

This Highlands fan expects Belfry to win. From what I've read on here Belfry is a tough hard nosed team. And while Central has some nice football players, lets not build them up to be the NE Patriots. They have a couple of defensive linemen that are very good (54 is the best D lineman we've faced this year)and a very good LBer. Defensive backs are average to slightly better than average. They do pursue the ball well, so if Belfry doesn't pass, the dbs will provide good run support. Their offense isn't very good. They had two big plays against us via the pass and didn't run the ball well at all. Depending on the weather, the ability to pass might be dimished. It may be a tight game for the first half, but I expect Belfry to win by 2 tds. Using Toots logic for picking BG against us, I guess I'll root for Central. Belfry's won it before, so its time for someone new to win it. Go Central.

Nobody's questioning anybody's work ethic. Let's just say I'd be willing to bet a steak dinner that the players of Belfry get a little more parent and family support than the players at Central. By support, I mean having a mom or dad waiting at the end of most every practice and every game to give you a ride home and a hot meal. That doesn't mean we "pity" the Central players, it means we respect the heck out of them for the obstacles they've overcome to get here.

 

Anyway, good luck to Belfry and Central. Looking forward to a very hard hitting football game.

I'm not sure that very many of us who aren't familiar with the history of Central have any idea of what they have overcome to get here. We are a county school in EKY and we are about as far removed from the inner city (or any city) as we can be. Our community LOVES our school and our kids and they go to great lengths to support our football team. Our kids know every other kids' parents because they are all constantly around the program, sponsoring cookouts on Thursdays, cheering at the games, welcoming them off the field, etc. It is a close knit group and I gather that historically that is about as far removed from Central's situation as it can be.

 

While I don't have a frame of reference to get a really good "feel" for their situation, I am getting a good picture of it from those of you who are close in proximity and know the history. I gather from your comments that you are proud of what they have done and the way they have done it. We all should be.

 

Would I be very far off base to make a comparison to the movie "Lean On Me" where Joe Clark instills some pride and work ethic into an otherwise underachieving student body and gets remarkable results?

 

All teams and all players who make it this far have had to work hard and sacrifice to get here. However, to be fair, we Pirate fans should just acknowledge that these kids from Central have had an altogether different set of struggles and the odds have been against them, yet they have come through with flying colors. That is an accomplishment worthy of our respect and it wouldn't be right to compare the two roads these teams have traveled to get here.
