I think it will fizzle since the Knights went down to 3A but the Boyle County - Lexington Catholic games where huge from the late 90's to today.

    I don't like either of them. ?

The Bowling Green vs South Warren rivalry have produced some classic games, both regular season and in the playoffs as district rivals.  While South moving to 6A this season may take a bit of the ramifications out of the picture, I think the energy around this game, especially in the Warren County area will still be really high.

They have played 14 times from October 20, 2017 to last Black Friday (November 29, 2024).  BG leads the series 8-6.  Only 4 of those games I would consider a blow out (each side winning 2 of those - BG - 10/20/17 and 11/11/22 - South - 10/1/21 and 11/12/21).  Seven of the games have been decided by 7 points or less.  They have been district rivals for 8 years and in those 8 years played each other twice in a season 6 times (only 2018 and 2023 they played only once).

Memorable South wins:

November 17, 2017 - The first year they played each other.  In the regular season BG blew out South 43-7, but South would rally the troops to STUN BG at home and earn a very tough gutsy win 28-21.

October 18, 2024 - Trailing 24-14 with roughly 8 minutes to play at BG.  Bryce Button would rally his troops and with Colton Veltcamp nearly unstoppable late found a way to put up 2 late TDs on the Purples to steal a win and gain home field in the playoffs and missing a trip to Rash Stadium in the process.

Memorable BG wins:

October 13, 2023 - South Warren had a great game plan to methodically control the clock, limit the BG Offense and dictate the pace of the game and they did exactly that going ahead (29-28) for the first time in the game on a Bryce Button 2-point conversion with roughly 35 seconds to play in the game.  But the Purples would not quit and Travey Barber made a great play to move the ball from the BG 30 to the South 40 in one play.  And with about 16 seconds to play, BG calls the hook-n-ladder - Barber to Trey Graham for the TD and epic win.  See below:

November 29, 2024 - On a bitterly cold night at South Warren, BG would not run one offensive play in the entire first quarter and still lead the game.  Wow!  Travey Barber and CJ Sweeney both ran kickoffs back for TDs and BG led 14-7 after 1 quarter.  QB Bryce Button had a sensational game for South, but there were some drops that hurt the Spartans.  And with roughly 1:30 to play in the game with BG at the South 30 on 4th in 8 down 28-24, Deuce Bailey scrambled and found a way to pick up the crucial first down to extend the drive.  The Purples would punch it in to secure the rivalry win and also their ticket to the 5A Championship as this was the only semi-final game the two have played.

Great stuff!  Is it August yet?

I appreciate BG paying South back with a hook and lateral because Glasgow had South beat a few years ago and they ran that play and won the game. But I also remember when it was BG and Warren Central that had the big rivalry in Warren Co. but with the South Warren taking a lot of WC enrollment it sure has changed things.

I always enjoyed the battle for the paddle.  Dayton and Bellevue.  Not always the best talent, but when those 2 hooked up it was 100% effort from both sides.

And for many years they played 2 times a year.  Once at the start of the year and then later as a district game.

It used to be the opening game of the season after scrimmages and the last game of the season.

For me:

St. X vs. Trinity

St. X vs. Male

St. X vs. Manual

Outside of these three, is there anyone else that St. X considers a rival? With DeSales and Holy Cross much smaller now, I'd guess any Catholic rivalry has probably diminished, at least in football.

You would have to ask Tiger fans, but since the turn of 2000, the series with Bowling Green is a dead lock 8-8. They have played every year since 2011. It is very competitive, and I look forward to the game yearly.

Trinity vs X

Desales vs Holy Cross

PRP vs Butler

Male vs Manual

Oldham Co vs North and South Oldham

KCD vs Holy Cross

(Keep in mind I am in Louisville)

DeSales and Holy Cross used to be but St. X never plays them anymore even at frosh and JV levels. I think a rival is a team that your disgusted you loss to them not just mad when lose.

East Jessamine vs West Jessamine used to be pretty big in Nicholasville. Most of the town would be at those games. Standing room only. The atmosphere is nowhere near that magnitude anymore. Mainly because neither team has been very good in recent years.

Mentioned by a couple of people already but Boyle/Danville and Boyle/LexCath have always been the most anticipated games for me.  There were many years if you made me choose a win over Danville or a win over LexCath I would have chosen LexCath.

This is next statement is a little off topic but also a little related.  Danville beat Boyle 17 years and 19 games straight and one time.  I played in one of those games that ended 44-0 and if both teams had had a cancelation that season for whatever reason and the only game they could have played was to play each other a second time I would have loved the chance to play them again.  I know what Danville has looked like the last few years and that the games essentially served no purpose and were hard to watch.  But Boyle would have never pulled out of scheduling them each year.  I know I'm contradicting myself because there is nothing for Boyle to gain from playing them right now.  But Boyle never talked about not playing.

I agree with your take on Danville/Boyle.  I would say from about 1985 to probably '94, those games were never going to be in doubt and never were.  But I do recall Boyle dropping Lincoln County somewhere around '90 and picking them up again because of District changes in the early 00's.

The 90s Boyle rivalries with Danville and LexCath were must see tv.
