Newport makes the long travel to Taylor County for an out of class battle! Who comes out on top?

A battle of two 1A schools along the Ohio River in Northern Kentucky. Newport, who has gone to back to back regional championship games, faces recent rival Ludlow. Ludlow comes off a season where they were hit by the injury bug. Both teams have big aspirations for the 2026 season and look to make some waves in the 1A football landscape.

Cov Cath beats them by 40. Terry needs another 2 Months and he’ll be fine.

I give Rick a little time and I think he can turn it around. I think Scott County dominates this scrimmage and Campbell will lick their wounds. Things can only go up in Alexandria.

Newport gets a true test on Friday from an Ohio school. Reading (OH) runs triple option concepts out of the shotgun, very different from what they saw this past Friday against Pendleton who is air raid heavy. Newport’s O-Line should make the difference. 3 qt’s. Varsity 1qt. JV. Should make for a great matchup!

Newport looked solid. With the scrimmage they were being very quick with the whistle on the QB’s. If not for that, Newport ends up with double digit sacks. Newport’s varsity was in control most of the time, with both JV’s being competitive. Should be interesting to see how both teams play this coming Friday with Newport at home vs. Reading (OH) and Pendleton playing Walton.

I’m rooting for them still. The defense will be fine, I think they have one of the best DC’s in Northern Kentucky. He makes things happen with what he has.

I’m curious to see how their o-line will do. That will answer the question how well they do. You can have all the athletes you want, but if you don’t have the boys upfront forget about it

The port travels up 27 to take on Pendleton County. Air raid vs. speed. Should be interesting. I look for Newport to dominate but Pendleton could make progress. Hopefully both teams get better and stay healthy.

A lot of the 1A schools in NKY do not have soccer, but I would say teams up here usually average between 25-38 players depending on the year. I think winning and success play a big role too. Newport we have seen our numbers go up because of recent success. But, I do agree with you on the number of students in the school! If they are not coming out, then usually that affects the how good the team is. I would use Holmes as an example. 4A school, but had to drop out of district play due to numbers (along with Highlands and Cov Cath being in the same district). I think that discussion would make a great thread!

The line has been progressing very well. This team has a tough schedule to prepare them for district play and for the playoffs. I think the wildcats can surprise a lot of people.

A school at the smaller level, Newport will have two matchups that could be very interesting. Vs. Paris Vs. New Cath The New Cath game could be the deciding factor who wins the district and Paris brings back a lot of talent as does Newport. Not exactly your Trinity's or St. X's, but at the small school level they're still intriguing to us small school people.

For Newport it will be Kay Sharp, Kaden Davis, Carvonta Roper,and it would have been Kendell Buck Barber but he is rehabbing an injury from the off-season. I would imagine Dayton will only have one considering they only had one senior and that would be Conner Hurtt

All great teams that year. I actually played Beechwood in the second round that year as a senior. It was a long night!

I thought Hazard was the state runner-ups in 2008, and Beechwood won the state title that year.

I thought he was let go at Scott? I'm not 100% sure, that's why I'm asking.

The biggest thing these players need is stability from a head coach who will stick around for longer than a cup of coffee. that's at any program obviously, but to be on the search this late at the end of the school year and possibly looking at a coach who has a track record of bouncing around and already willing to leave a school where he hasn't even coached a game, let alone a summer practice does not sound like the move. Hopefully Gallatin can figure it out and have success down the road.

There is also an argument for the '92 and '87 Boone County teams that were coached by legendary coach Owen Hauck. '92 lost in the championship game 3-0 to St. X in the 4A title game, and then 17-14 in '87 in the 4A title game to Shelby County. Would have been nice to see Boone County have a state title in the trophy case.

Why do you think this? they bring back a lot of talent.

Newport's scrimmage vs. Reading (OH) will be at Newport August 14th.

I will also say the '99 Bellevue Tigers. Undefeated leading up to the regional championship game against Beechwood (who they beat earlier that year). Lost 35-0 in that game, but before that game they were on a very hot streak. Probably one of Charlie Coleman's best squads outside of the 1990 Bellevue team that were state runner ups.

'96 Dayton Greendevils. Lost in the region to Beechwood on 4th and goal. They win that game, they win their 2nd 1A state title in football.
