The Colonels and the Breds have scrimmaged each another most of the years of Eddie Eviston's tenure as Cov Cath's head coach, but in his 12th season at the helm of the Colonel football program, the scrimmage has a new twist with Eddie's former defensive coordinator Terry Brown standing on the opposite sideline as head coach of the Thoroughbreds football team.

New Cath will have a new look with Brown as head coach and defensive coordinator, and fellow New Cath grad/former Cov Cath assistant coach Ryan Studer will be calling the plays as offensive coordinator. Cov Cath will have Eddie Eviston calling the shots on offense again, but we'll have a peek at what the Colonels defensive unit has to offer with Mike Woolf and Brian Weinrich coaching on the sidelines. Woolf, an '88 Cov Cath grad, was an assistant coach at New Cath during Terry Brown & Eddie Eviston's high school football playing days before heading to Campbell County under head coach Mark Goetz and then becoming Bryson Warner's defensive coordinator at Ryle and then serving a return-stint as head coach at Campbell County. Weinrich, a '90 Highlands grad (along with retired Male head coach Chris Wolfe) served for 18 years as an assistant coach, defensive coordinator, and assistant head coach at Highlands under Dale Mueller before taking over as head coach in 2014. After leaving Highlands he served as head coach at Newport High School for one season before taking over at Campbell County in 2022 when Woolf stepped down as the Camels' skipper.

With both teams having turned over much of their 2025 production, Friday's scrimmage will be premiering a big batch of new starters.

After graduating their 2025 starting quarterback their three leading rushers, and their top five receivers, the Breds will have a bevy of new faces on offense, along with plenty of new faces on the defensive side of things after losing most of their leading tacklers from last year to graduation. Senior QB Parker Hurtt will be starting behind center on Friday, and senior Vander Hundermeyer will be toting the pigskin out of the offensive backfield.

Cov Cath will have junior Dylan Courtney stepping in to fill their vacancy at QB1, and look to see a lot of sophomore Kiyan Miller and junior Jace Thornton carrying the ball. Senior Mac Cogswell and sophomore Brandon Smith to be among the most favored wideouts, joining senior tight ends Owen Pitzer & Spencer Clukey to fill out the Colonels' primary passing game. On the defensive side of things, 2025 leading tackler Cash Myers will return for his junior season at linebacker along with senior DL/OL Jonny Lind (an Army West Point commit) and senior linebacker Owen Pitzer (a Ball State commit). Brandon Smith, who was 6th in overall tackles during Cov Cath's 2025 campaign, will lead the defensive backfield for the Colonels.

Who's ready for some football??

I think Spencer is going to have a really good senior year. Being TE2 in your own class with a running QB is not a great recipe for production, but there’s just not a ton of guys that big (6’4, 237) that move that well. I think he’ll make a big impact on both sides of the ball this year.

I don't think there's any plan for an audio broadcast and it appears that they've scrapped the plans for the video stream. To my recollection, the football scrimmages didn't have any audio for the video livestreams in previous years, and the Colonel Athletic Network didn't start their audio streams until the season opener.

This is how you get better. Play teams that are superior and gives you what you need to work on. I’m sure New Cath did some good things in this scrimmage.

I went- love the start of football season! CCH looked big ,athletic and strong tonight. Snaps were very rusty , special teams may need some work.

Breds will be fun to watch this season and I’ll be rooting for them!
