Why is Coach Sullivan being forced out of Cooper?

If I were Sully I wouldn't want to come back if either the principal or the AD was still there because I am finding it hard to believe that the AD tried to go to bat for him. The AD is probably trying to save his own job right now. I wonder how often it is a principal does the AD's job for him.

Man this whole post, and  this specific comment, has Grant County written all over it lol.

I just don't understand people anymore.  I don't see how anyone wants to continue to be a coach or be a high school referee.

You should've had your mom go complain to the Coach. LOL

  • If your boss wants you out, and you have lots of options in life, do you really want to fight it?  More of a general question than anything.

I believe the principal has the final say in personnel decisions.

Is the NKy market small enough and close enough that Sully’s departure under this cloud won’t leave a stain on his future?  Will the sun shine through all this because of the reputation he has built and rightfully earned?

I'm going to say this won't stain Sully at all.

I believe that but I wonder how often the principal goes to the AD and says "hey this guy built us into a winning program and we are at our peak right now but it's time for him to go, I don't like the way he is winning and sending great young men out into the real world to be productive members of society"

I was told yesterday evening that Coach Sullivan was placed on a "Corrective Action Plan" after last season. I am assuming this is some sort of like probationary period, but if anyone can enlighten me (and the rest of us) on what a Corrective Action Plan means exactly I would appreciate it.

Think of it as a PIP (performance improvement plan) in the private sector. If you do not meet the PIP/CAP, the next step is termination.

Assuming the reasoning is culture I would like the principal's definition/understanding of culture in this context.   In other words, what is the "culture" the principal wants changed and what "culture" does the principal want it changed to?

From Google and AI I believe:

What is best definition of culture?

AI Overview
Culture is a complex concept that encompasses the shared beliefs, values, and behaviors of a group of people. It includes language, customs, and beliefs about roles and relationships. Culture is dynamic and evolves over time.
Characteristics of culture
Shared practices: Culture includes the way people act, think, and behave.
Shared beliefs: Culture includes the values, beliefs, and traditions of a group.
Shared symbols: Culture includes how people understand symbols, from language to hand gestures.
Shared material objects: Culture includes the material objects that are common to a group or society.

Examples of culture
food, music, art, religion, language, customs, beliefs about roles and relationships, laws, attitudes, and habits.
Culture and society
Culture is distinct from social structure and economic aspects of society, but it is connected to them. Culture is often attributed to a specific region or location.
Culture and identity
Culture can be used to define a group of people as a collective. It can also be used to understand how people in different cultures relate to one another.

From consistently winning programs, you always hear about everybody being on the same page and going the same direction.

I wonder since Cooper is such a large school with a lot of parents who have money and put a lot of time into their kids who think that their kid is better than someone else’s kid. Didn’t we just hear about this going on with the football program too? I think that speaks to the administration not backing the coaches 100% and letting people get into their ears.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but as Shannon Sharpe says,” I see, better than I hear” And what I see from both the football and basketball programs are winners with good talented hard working kids so I don’t necessarily believe what I’m hearing that culture is not a good fit. And I think there are a lot of parents who want to be a part of winning programs and want their kid to be the star, and look to blame someone else when they are not.

Look. There is no doubt Sullivan is a great coach and person.  His players love him and he gets the most out of them.  There is no culture problem at Cooper.  I believe what happen and just a guess is that Wilson told Tim to change something within the program. Obviously this hasn’t happen to the principal’s liking and feels like he has given Sullivan a chance.  Very unfortunate situation.

In that case, it seems like termination is warranted if he did not uphold his end of the plan. Now I guess the question is if the plan was warranted or not.

Usually a CAP is something that is used when a teacher or department is not meeting a specific standard. I’ve never heard of it being used for a coach before.

Based on what we do know, culture was a factor in the principal's decision, so the CAP would/will show what issue the principal had with Tim and program.

The AD at Cooper is also the Head Football Coach. His job is nowhere near in danger, especially after the season they had.

I don't think that the football coach should be in danger of losing his job, but being AD doesn't protect you from losing that gig. Actually, in today's world, it may put you at MORE risk of it.

Also, as Sullivan's situation has proven, a successful season has very little to do with retaining a coaching position at Cooper.

And there has to be some truth to the CAP as Sully went after the Conner job last year as mentioned before. They had a great season, with a lot returning, and he tried to get out. I believe the girls coach also interviewed for that job. Not insinuating anything at all, but why would both coaches want to get out after both of them having great seasons? Definitely seems like the administration there may not be the most supportive of their coaches.
