Sullivan is a great coach however he let Rondon’s poor sportsmanship play out for far too long and that boiled over in the regional final last year when he was walking off the court not trying to shake the Newport players hands. The parent who tossed the object onto the court also is no longer with the program so I am unsure how this constitutes him being let go for behavior this season. Strange all around. 

Is Sullivan supposed to be responsible for the actions of parents too?  A kid may have lunatic parents but what is a coach supposed to about that?  You can’t punish the kid.  He can’t make the parents run laps or sit out a quarter of a game.  From what I saw, whenever a player got a technical on Cooper’s team they would sit the rest of the game.  

Let me clarify in no way shape or form do I think that Sully should be let go.

Not entirely but I do know at other 9th region schools there has been family members banned from attending home games. What occurred at region last season was definitely lack of control but as I previously stated both of those parties are no longer at Cooper.

Together, they have built a culture of leadership, teamwork, selfless service, and accountability. Oh, and by the way, they have done so through the beautiful game of basketball. My hope is that common sense prevails and Coach Sullivan and his staff will be retained. With as many folks in NKY supporting Cooper Basketball, Truist Arena may not be big enough this weekend!  These 2 men are special coaches.

From what I have saw last year at the region final and gathered through the grape vine is after the game while Rondon was headed towards the locker room and not shaking hands some adults from Newport were berating him with insults. His father who was on the court with a media pass and the principal  were both near this going on. Rondon's father proceeded to go defend his son as the principal watched. Once Yamil's father started defending him the principal stepped in and had some words for the Rondon's that they didn't take very well to so then the confrontation went from the Newport adults vs Rondon's to the Rondon's vs the principal. I can't say the Rondon's were right in getting into a back and forth with the principal or Newport fans at all. The words that were exchanged between the Rondon's and the principal had to of been pretty harsh for it to lead to the results it did. I was told the principal over reacted to the Rondon's but I will give the principal the benefit of the doubt that he is a professional and wasn't respected as so accordingly. The principal should be shown respect by all parties especially at a KHSAA event. On the other hand one could say that if the principal would have intervened in a timely fashion to one of his students being insulted by adults then Yamil's father never would have had to step in to the situation and that situation could have been avoided. Yamil's father felt that the principal did not try to stand up for his son when his son needed him so that's why he had to step in. I would say if Yamil would have went to the hand shake line like he should have the whole situation could have been avoided. I do not think all this warrants Sully not being retained unless there were more incidents like this that occurred and the principal felt that Sully was promoting a hostile "culture", which I highly doubt.

Rondon is an outlier here. You can see how he carries himself on the court and if I'm a coach trying to make a deep run I'm not keeping him around. Once the other team gets in his head or the going gets tough he is a non-factor to being out right negative for his team. In my opinion last years antics lead to him being rightfully let go by Cooper's basketball team so I don't know how this goes against the "culture" at Cooper. 

I don't know anything concrete in regard to a corrective action plan being put into action for Coach Sullivan, but I do know that Sullivan had been receiving some criticism within the school community at Cooper for his willingness to tolerate the antics from Yamil Rondon and his family for a long while prior to the 2024 region tournament.

Word from the handful of Northern Kentucky basketball coaches I know who are plugged into many if the goings-on in the area was that the Rondon family once again started getting vocal and causing a stink at Cooper threatening to that Yamil would transfer to Newport after the 2024 regional tournament had come and gone. Coach Sullivan took up for the Rondons with the Cooper administration in order to try to ice things over in an effort to keep Yamil playing for the Jaguars, and the Cooper administrators effectively rebuffed Sullivan and said "good riddance" to the Rondon family, and the Rondon family responded in kind by transferring him to Newport.

Once that happened, Sullivan went ahead and interviewed for the Conner and Dixie Heights head coaching jobs, citing his frustration and falling out with the administrators at Cooper. Maybe the Cooper administrators had slapped Sullivan with a corrective action plan at the point where he was out interviewing for other jobs, maybe they hadn't. I don't know. But the fact is, Sullivan was out looking for a job outside of Cooper and he was making his dissatisfaction with the Cooper administration known. I guess I just can't say that I'm completely shocked to my core that those administrators, who Sullivan was out telling interviewers that he didn't want to work for anymore, would turn around the following year and part ways with him.

Not knowing what Coach Sullivan said in those interviews but if you are indeed overly critical of your administrators, as a coach, you are cutting your own throat.  There is no protection for coaches like tenure,etc.  Its all year to year so once you start down that path its going to get you cut.

Thought was strange also that if they made him and his dad so up set how did they end up at Newport.

This is a very good post!! Any job where you start going against your boss isn't going to end well for you.

How Sully is being treated isn't necessarily fair but this is the result when you take a stand against your boss.

So the coach stood up for his player, quote "try to ice things over" , the principal (administration) didn't agree- the family ended up leaving.

Seems like the coach did what he felt was right ( tried to ice things over) - the administration got (probably) what they wanted (the family transferred) and the two sides can't agree to disagree on this issue?

Just my opinion -from the outside looking in- but sounds like the principal (administration) wants to prove they have the power.  If you're in that position of power do you really want only "yes" people around you? you should be able to have an open mind and deal with people that have different  opinions.

that's the problem today - to many people think that if you don't agree with them- have the same views, then you are wrong.

Just an outsider looking in- reading this thread- I have no dog in the fight.

Is the rest of the states' HS basketball drama this insane? Or are NKY parents/fans/parents/coaches/dogs/cats/etc. just this wild?
