Open Job: Kentucky

This has been a weird situation.  Cal still hasn't announced it to UK, still hasn't met the players, still no press conference from Arkansas.  Cal getting cold feet or just trying to stick it to UK as long as he can?

You have to hire Reed Sheppard as a player/coach.  Hope he starts himself.

Always interesting when people try to say Calipari doesn’t develop players. The majority of players that stayed more than one year got much better every year under him. Then even players that weren’t

According to reports Kentucky is gonna contact Danny Hurley, Billy Donovan and Scott Drew and make them tell them No they’re not interested. Then go from there.

if they all three say no then UK could be in some trouble.

Isn't that hiring what they just ran off.  A guy with a title, a few close but no cigars and a few first round flops?   Again, define insanity.

Absolutely. Unless they hire 51-year-old Rick Pitino or Hurley, people will soon realize most of these coaches' results are about the same.

I believe people try and make too much of this stuff. No, Calipari has not called a press conference. But that does not mean things are not working behind the scenes how they are supposed to. We are talking about a multi-million dollar, multi-year transaction with lawyers and higher education institutions involved. These things take a few days to iron out details.

I wonder if we will ever have a Cal Day at Rupp and put his banner in the rafters.

Would we do it during a UK v Arkansas game, like we did with Tubby when he brought High Point to town.

His banner will be in the rafters, but it probably will come after he retires. I don’t see them doing it when he is coaching a conference opponent.

I do think Cal should get a standing ovation the first time he gets announced as Arkansas coach when he returns to Rupp. The last few years hasn’t been great, but he deserves to re recognized by us fans his first time back. Then cheer like crazy with the craziest home environment ever to try to destroy his Arkansas team.

I think Donovan will be our guy. If Mitch gets Drew I think a lot of fans would revolt (I.e. Schiano to Tennessee). IF Donovan says no you would have to pivot to a tier of coaches like Sean Miller, Will Wade, or T.J. Otzelberger because more than likely UConn throws a bag and Hurley says no.

I definitely want Donovan over Drew. However, I think fans would much rather have Drew over the other names you mentioned like Miller, Wade, etc.

Scott Drew would be another notch in the rivalry as well. The coach who turned down Louisville, goes to Kentucky.

Meh, maybe.

While Drew was the "top priority," I didn't feel like most Louisville fans were in love with the idea. Especially from a personality standpoint.

Same. No way is Barnhart going to hire a "big personality"-type that will be bigger than the program. From all indications his relationship with Cal wasn't good. I think a more down-to-earth type of coach like Scott Drew is way more in line with Mitch's way of thinking.

Which would continue with the normal history of UK hires after legends leave. Hall after Rupp, Tubby after Pitino. The next coach is going to be a good coach, that may even win a title. However is a coach the whole fan base truly never gets behind. Then we will get the alcoholic coach after that. Then they will go for the big personality again that the whole fan base gets behind for the first ten years at least.

I think those days are long gone for everybody, not just UK.

Go ahead and hire Huggins...chalk the last 4 years of Cal as the Meh time period and let's move on in 2-3 years when there is a better batch of coaches.

If you are Barnhart, what is the offer to Hurley/Donovan?  I say 5 year 50 million and tell them there is 33 million in a rainy day fund that they can use as they see fit...?

Huggins would not last at Kentucky.   First member of the BBN to give him crud about anything is likely to get told off in an expletive filled tirade on the first call in show.

Sorry the sarcasm didn't flow through the screen.  It was a joke.
