I’ve asked this before but never got a clear answer. Mayfield is one of the winningest teams in the country, not just the Bluegrass. What took so long for Mayfield to reach the state finals, once the playoffs started in 1959 (which we can all agree was too long of a wait considering basketball started way before that)? I know many teams claim a poll championship, does Mayfield claim any? They have a super impressive history just curious is all. Good luck and safe travels to both teams.

Tons of great teams and several undefeated teams from way back then but its hard to garner media to support you this far West where there are no major populations centers.  That's my opinion for what its worth. In addition, a couple number one ranked teams that got upset would be the rest of the answer.

In their game with Somerset last week he tore his jersey. Prior to the start of the second half the PA announcer told over the speakers that #9 would be wearing #80 for the remainder of the game. It wasn't done in secret.

Prior to 1975 there were only 3 classes in KY. 3A was all just Louisville schools. 1A was all the very small schools. And 2A, which Mayfield was in, was everyone else in the state. Meaning that Mayfield was having to compete against many teams over twice their size in order to win a state championship. They were competing against the likes of Highlands, Hopkinsville, Paducah Tilghman, Madisonville, Owensboro, Tates Creek, Bryan Station, Lafayette and many other big schools to win a state championship. Not saying it couldn’t have been done but it just never happened. Once they went to 4 classes in 1975 it evened things out a bit and that’s when you start to see Mayfield’s playoff success. Since 1976 they have been to 26 state title games in 48 years.

Mayfield has only lost to one team more than once in their 25 state title game appearances and that’s Danville, that has beaten them all 5 times they have faced off in championship games. Danville has also beat them several other times in final four matchups keeping the Cardinals out of multiple other state finals games. Danville has definitely historically been Mayfield’s Achilles heel that has kept them from achieving even far more success than their long list of achievements that they have compiled despite the Danville curse.

True to the word but I will add what I posted as part of it from what I have been told by old timers. 

I will simply echo what has already been said.  Hendo is the only common opponent. OC wins by 20 at home, Mayfield wins by 14 on the road, to me that's a wash.  I do give the edge to Mayfield on SOS.  I think that is clear to anyone paying attention.  However, OC has also beaten all their opponents decisively.  There were no close calls.  So that has to be taken into consideration.

I have been very impressed with Mayfield's elevated play the last three weeks.  I felt like they were sleep walking thru the back half of their schedule, and to see them crank it up the way they have gives me confidence that they can handle anything coming their way if they stay the course and keep playing with the same level of intensity.  They certainly have more offensive balance than OC.  And from what few highlights I've seen of the Aces, I feel like Mayfield will have an edge on the LOS.

I don't know what to think of OC.  Schedule is lacking, but again there were no close calls.  And if I had to pick the most dangerous offensive weapon in high school football it would be a dual threat quarterback.  Atwell looks the part.  He has complementary pieces.  They obviously play good team ball.  And at this point, all it takes is one good game to seal the deal.  Can they keep doing what they have done all season while playing the toughest opponent they have played yet?

Going to be fun to see how this one plays out!

I truly have no clue what to expect.  Just hope the big red machine has one good showing left in them.  I feel the same way about this game as I did with LCA and Beechwood.  Flip a coin.
