Well here we go a game between to of the top teams in Kentucky in any class the past 5+ years. This is also only the 2nd time these two teams have played the last being in the 2019 5A State Championship game won by the Colonels 14-7. With the change this year of having the first two rounds played between sister districts these two are meeting up in round 2 of the playoffs.

The Colonels are 9-2 and ranked #4 in the 5A RPI. There only two losses were a 21 point loss in the first game of the season to Ohio power Cincinnati Elder and a loss to district rival Highlands in week 8 by a score of 32-21. It was Highlands first win over Cov. Cath. in 7 years and 9 straight losses. The Broncos come into the game 11-0 and ranked #1 in the 5A RPI. While the Colonels have played a tougher schedule than the Broncos they do have one common opponent in Great Crossing who the Colonels defeated Friday night at home in the first round of the playoffs 21-0. The Broncos defeated the Warhawks 54-0 at Great Crossing on Oct. 14. The Broncos are 31-4 since these two last played in December of 2019.

Covington Catholic comes into this game avenging just over 29 points a game while only allowing just over 14 points per game. The Broncos are avenging just under 47 points a game (that is including a 1-0 forfeit score) they are allowing just over 4 points a game including 5 shutouts and 9 running clocks. This is one of four or five potential really good games in round two of the 5A playoffs.  I for one am looking forward to this one Friday night kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 and can be seen on NFHS Network (with membership). I said before that Cov Cath had a chance. I don’t know if I believe that to be true anymore. Starting to look like Douglass might running clock there way to the State Finals

Cov Cath doesn't have a chance. 

Would love seeing Cov Cath pull the upset but don’t see it happening. I think that FD wins without much trouble.

I like FD 35-7.

Catholic has the history, Douglas has the talent.

I don't see a pathway that ends with a CovCath victory, BUT, I will be shocked beyond belief if there is a running clock.  

This might be last chance to keep alive any glimmer of hope for the rest of 5A. If CovCath keeps it competitive, that's at least something the other contenders can hold on to. If Douglass takes the Colonels apart, it's over, because I don't know that anyone else in this class is head and shoulders above CovCath. It's the Broncos and then several others on or around the same level.

This will be the best defense Douglass has faced this year. Injuries have hurt but the CCH defense is still a good one. Here are some numbers to consider, especially for those saying running clock and similar predictions:

The last time a Kentucky team scored more than 38 on Covington Catholic was 7 years ago. 

In the 5 years previous to this one, Lexington Catholic is the only Kentucky school that has scored more than 28 on Cov Cath. 

The question is, will the Douglass offensive play calling be aggressive or conservative?  Cov Cath can stay in the game if FDHS plays it safe, and shows too much respect to the Colonels.

Big games have seen the Broncos give too much respect to the opponent in the opening quarter, rather than being in attack mode. 

I think McPeek & Co want this one bad. 42-14 Broncos (one score will come against the 2nd team).

 

 

Douglass 38-10. FD has to many athletes for Cov Cath to keep up with. How is Cov with the injury bug? Any players back this week?

Good assessment.  I think Douglass comes out aggressive and will want to prove dominance early and often.  That is my expectation. 

Now, if CovCath can get one, or two, early stops on defense, we may see the Douglas play calling get a little more deliberate and we will have a game. 

How does Douglass attack on offense? Run first? What is their passing game like?
