For the most part, Cov Cath wasn't really making any playoff statements in the 00's, while Highlands was piling up a good number of their state championships during that time period. I'm not positive what Highlands' playoff run looked like in 1990, but that could have potentially been a possibility for your scenario @TheConch. Actually, I believe that was the only year possible that neither Cov Cath or Highlands played in regional championship/3rd round.

16 of Cov Cath's 29 playoff losses (55%) came at the hands of the eventual state champs, and 2 of the remaining 13 losses came at the hands of the runner ups. So that means the Colonels have faced a state championship finalist in 26 of their 37 playoff appearances (70%).

A lot of people talk about the skill players for FD but, in my opinion, the line of scrimmage is where they dominate. D line and O line are both great. You talk about the Lex Cath game as if something in regards to the run game should be highlighted. Lex Cath had 42 yards of rushing against Boyle. They beat Boyle by the big play in the passing game in the last minutes of the game. 

Cov Cath should not underestimate Freddie D. Very good team that is well coached. Cov Caths offense was held to 7 points by Lex Cath and the Freddie D defense is much better. 

I actually heard Cov Cath is studying film of Highlands this week because they figured they can look past Frederick Douglass and get an easy running clock win.

90 was my brothers senior year. I they somehow didn’t make the playoffs because they lost to Lloyd.

Well then there's the answer @TheConch ...the last time neither Highlands nor Covington Catholic were competing for a region championship/playing in a 3rd round game was in 1990.

Mr. Football Spotlight Game

Bryant hasn't been a stat monster this season, but Douglass picks their spots well when using him offensively. Whether in coverage or run support, he's one of the top defenders in the state and an elite return man. No one on the field has the potential to impact the game in the variety of ways Bryant does.
