This is a really unfortunate incident. And there will not be equal penalties. I certainly agree with the assessment that the player initiates this incident and the official escalates it. I'm not saying I wouldn't have done anything different if I were the official. In the heat of the moment, a shove to get the player away from me would seem appropriate. 

But here's what will bother me: the player, if he's not a senior will be suspended for 2-3 games to start next season. If the school really pushes it, they will likely get to count a scrimmage as one of those games. That official has most likely worked his last postseason game. If he is allowed to come back and in my mind that will be a big if (also why would he want to?) he will see a drastic reduction in his schedule from this year.  Just my opinion.

I totally disagree. This situation has to be addressed by the KHSAA, the players school, and the official's local association.

I don't see anything happening to the official and see nothing wrong with what the official did. I think the punishment for the player should be in the 10 game range at a minimum. With what is happening with officiating, the KHSAA will be very strong in support of the official.

What do you think the ref should do? Just let the player attack him and let him beat you down? The refs have all the rights to protect their bodies from harm!

I kind of see that, but part of me thinks that if someone does not come down hard today, then what will happen tomorrow? 

This incident sorta of clarifies why it's the custom of many officials to run off the court immediately at the ending of the game. I'm not a fan of zero tolerance but there are times for it and unless a player is attacked by an official there is no excuse for a player showing any hostility towards an official. If the player has a grievance with an official he should go through his coach to get it resolved.

I don't really see anything wrong with the official either, and hope that you're right, but I don't think that will be the case.

I've always heard this, but have no idea of the accuracy. The only time I've seen a senior ejected without games left to sit out was a player who did not play a spring sport.

Yeah, I’d say it’s pretty rare. I can’t recall any specific examples but I’ve heard the same.

I know of one case where a soccer player who was also the kicker on the football team got ejected in the last soccer match of the season, and then had to sit out the next two football games since the soccer season was over.

I agree that the senior will have to sit out games in the next sport season.

When Corbin had the kid deck the other kid from the state championship he didn’t play any spring sports. He ended up having to take anger management classes.
