Seen a video and yes it's all over Twitter of a ref in their game pushing a Knox Central player. 

Any idea why? What was the cause?

The player certainly initiated it based on that video.  Did the ref push back?

The video I seen was was court side and it shows the ref pushing the player. That's all I seen. Not sure if something was done before that or not.

I was watching it on a stream and the camera caught the sideline view. It happened as time expired and players were walking off the court. From baseline view, it definitely shows the player initiating contact but the referee feeding into it and escalating the incident. Looks bad on both player and ref IMO.

Agreed.  That other view shows the ref pushing back.  I wonder how old the player is.

100% on the player. He purposely bumps into the ref and starts the incident.

It's tournament time.  Emotions are high.  They can both publicly apologize and move on.  No need to point fingers or assign blame.  

That kid had no reason to put his hands on the ref. The ref had all rights to defend himself. Don’t put this on the ref!

IMO: player can never ever push an official. If this player is an underclassmen his playing career should be over. No room in basketball to tolerate any intentional physical contact from a player on an official.  

Wonder if this will make Sportscenter?

These players and their attitudes have made HS basketball hard to watch. 75% of the games I’ve watched this year with teams from various places in the state have turned into a chippy mess. Coaches excuse it by saying “he plays with passion,” and “I love his competitiveness.” The truth is, the coaches are just failing to teach their kids mental toughness. They can’t handle a loss.

This is an isolated incident and it’s not fair to say this is reflective of all high school basketball players. Yes the game is different, but it’s no more “chippy” than it was when I was in high school 35 years ago.

That aside, I don’t know what might have happened prior to this, but what’s a ref supposed to do when a kid starts bumping up into you like what happened here?  Looks to me like the the red was trying to get out of the situation and create space. He certainly didn’t shove the kid maliciously.
