Local Northern Ky School Player is apparently not allowed to Walk during his Senior night because he is suspended for two games (senior night is one of them). He was having a bad game and was replaced. As any good coach would do. Instead of being a senior leader he took his helmet, his equipment and jersey off walked out of the game while running his mouth. 
 

My question for discussion is how do school handle situations like this? In my opinion he would never be allowed back on the team. As a player I always would get mad at my team mates who would throw their helmet, heck I would call them out for sitting on them.

Wow! I agree that a team player would support his team and work to make his next game better than the last which should be your goal anyway. I can't even imagine any of the kids my boys played with doing something like that.

He did this during the game? And he is still on the team? 

It’s this generation. They watch the fools in the NCAA/NBA/MLB/NFL…whatever sport it is…do the same thing, and they think that’s how they’re going to behave. 

I think they're should be a form of penalty such as suspension. I think these are also kids that make mistakes and if contrite and want to be a good team mate they should get a 2nd chance. If after 2nd chance and no improvement then boot them permanently. I know there could be exceptions for truly egregious behavior and should be handled on a case by case basis. 

A little clarity on this.  Coach suspended him 2 games.

One of those is this weekend which is senior night.

His parent(s) want him to be able to be recognized as a senior on the team.  They are not asking to be allowed to play.  They had no beef with the 2 game suspension.

Social media now being used to pressure coach into letting him walk and be recognized as a senior since next week he will be suited back up and playing anyway.  I have read through several posts on FB and nobody is asking that he be allowed to play, but there is a huge groundswell of support to let him be recognized as a senior member of the team.  This is now becoming a major issue over the whole being "recognized on senior night."  School admin and coach on same page but boy they are getting abused.

I say recognize the student- athlete on senior night (khakis and jersey) keep his suspension days. Have him apologize to the team IN PERSON. Now is he suspended from school or just from team activities (practices and games)? If he is administratively suspended from school then he can't return on school property til his days are served.  

As an outsider to this situation a couple thoughts: 

1. Once the decision is made to suspend the player for 2 games, the coach can't back track at this point. If he does, he loses all credibility/trust with his players, parents, and administration. 

2. A lot on here are calling for the player to be kicked off the team. To me, that is in direct contrast of what high school athletics should be teaching young people. We all make mistakes, we take the punishment, we learn from it, and we become better people (hopefully) because of it. This young man sounds like someone who may need football more than football needs him. 

3. Finally, for anyone like @wrn1979 saying this is a "generational thing" or "kids these days have no discipline or respect" "get off my lawn!".... STOP. That is absolutely absurd and completely unfair to young people. Players have been doing these things in every single generation; they are just far more publicized now through social media, ESPN, etc. so it seems like there are more.  

I think we sometimes forget that these young men are still kids. The correct thing to do here IMO is to ensure he doesn't play for two games, but allow him to walk in senior night events. Then, even more important than all of this, is to have a real deep dive - BY THE CORRECT PEOPLE - on why he did what he did and have him concentrate on that for that two week period. 

Too many times, that second part gets lost. Again, they are still kids. There has to be some flexibility in these cases, especially if this is a first time offense or if there are mitigating circumstances. 

Here is now where things get hairy.  Once the admin and coach make a decision, can you give the perceived appearance that social media pressure caused you to change your mind?

Having dealt with many of these types of situations from a variety of angles, I wish in hind sight that the coach and administrators had not banned him from walking out and being recognized as a senior.  In my opinion (which means very little here) banning him from senior night was not the right decision.  Again though don't know 100% of everything that transpired.

Suspending him is absolutely the correct move. If he is good enough to stay with your team he should be recognized at senior night though. Put him in khakis and a jersey top for it and let him walk in it. That moment is the culmination of hours of practice, sweat, blood, etc and not to mention the exhausted mornings that mom and dad drove him to summer practices, etc. 

I personally would let him walk. He is still on the team and has contributed.

However, this is the coaches call and should ultimately be his decision. He knows the situation better than any of us. Admin should back the coach.

Suspension stands.  Apology directly to his teammates.   He walks on senior night but, sorry, no jersey to wear.  He forfeited that right for the two week suspension.  Yes, kids make mistakes and show bad judgement.  Another chance is absolutely warranted if there is true contrition and a desire to "make it right," but there are consequences to your actions.
