I am not disagreeing with anyone.  I am all for the paying a higher salary for the best candidate.  I just don't know how you justify this with the local tax payers.  I would argue a band director works with more kids than anyone.  What are they getting paid?

Coaches are underpaid and have way more influence over a school or community.  Most administrators would not want to admit that.

This is all speculation on my end, but I wonder if the amount of money that programs provide for the athletic funds have anything to do with it? I know some others have mentioned it, but there is a reason at the college ranks that your Men's Basketball Coach makes SIGNIFICANTLY more than the Men's Tennis Coach or Baseball Coach, etc.

In pretty much every high school, I would guess that football brings in the most, with boys basketball as a second. Now, I am sure there are some smaller schools where that may not be the case, or the occasional 35 time state champion soccer program that everyone comes to watch. Hopefully, you get where I am going with this.

A great business at a fair price is superior to a fair business at a great price.

HHS football can be a great business. They've had coaches from multiple states and both the college & HS football apply. If you're expecting someone to pick up and move their family from out of state for a job where they may be given the boot in 2 or 3 yrs if they don't succeed, you better be offering them a fair price to do so. I call $16K fair for that. I'm confident all my HHS friends think $16K is fair for that, and they're the ones footing the bill.

Listerman is obviously a fine coach, but the expectations of basketball are not the same as football at Highlands. Just look at Listerman's record from his first few years. That's why he's not making the same as the football coach. And were they searching HS & college coaches in multiple states when they looked for new coaches to hire for the hoops and baseball team like they are for the football team? I have my doubts.

Also like somebody said already the Oline coach is responsible for coaching roughly the same number of players as the basketball and baseball coaches. Say what you will about responsibilities beyond that, but I think an assistant football coach has a lot more going on than an assistant for most other sports programs.

Absolutely it does and quite honestly, it should...

 

For years basketball programs get the same financial budgets at most ALL school's as well, despite carrying LESS kids and bringing in less money (boys and girls gates COMBINED sometime equal those of football, but it usually takes BOTH together)

Do band kids hit each other in the head and neck area at full speed? There is added responsibility with football for the safety of the athletes. It deserves more money to insure proper instruction for a collision sport with 100 members. And Highlands band probably doesn't have as high as numbers of the football team.

I've done this awhile in several sports both in boys and girls and I could not possibly disagree with you more.  Some sports, sure, most sports, not a chance.  Not in a quality program of any sort anyway.
