Will Wolford Out At St. X

Featured Replies

I do not think he would give up his job at DeSales, but a coach not mentioned and should be is Harold Davis. What he has accomplished in his short stint at DeSales is remarkable.

Question for the in the know.

Did Coach Wolford maybe resign and move on because he couldn’t win because of a lack of talent or perhaps the cupboard is bare and like someone else said leaving while his stock is high.

Cupboard not bare. Should have better team next year than this year.

Interesting, so the talent is there and a coach with Wolfords credentials couldn’t get it done.

The question has to present itself, was he given an option to resign or else?

It doesn’t sound like it and it sounds like Coach is a really good guy and has the interest of his boys first

I have a lot of respect for X and never for once would think a program like yours would not have the talent to work with.

Hiring Chuck Smith would put X on equal footing with T.

Guru...really think you have your estimation bar way too high on Chuck. Beating a Trinity is a much more monumental task than beating the 4A opponents that Chuck has successfully mastered.

Don't know where it would put X. I do feel very confident in saying that Chuck is the best high school coach. I know Boyle has talent but no team is more prepared or gets more out of his team. Once he gets his system and his culture in place look out!

3A teams.

Chuck has a proven track record. He took a Boyle County program that was literally none for nothing and made it into what it is today. He then went to UK and coached some of the better linebackers to ever play at UK. Then he comes back to Boyle County and gets it done again. Etc.

I don't think his estimation is too far off. I won't exactly say it will put St. Xavier on the same footing with Trinity because they are a monster program but I guarantee you his team's with that wealth of talent would constantly give Trinity a run for their money.

Regardless, he's not going to St. Xavier.

I don’t know any inside information but it appears that Coach Woolford had other responsibilities in his life that wouldn’t allow him to give 100% of his time and efforts to coaching a major program like X. He had to make a decision and he decided to give up coaching. I wonder if he would have made the same decision if he had beaten Trinity for the state title.

Chuck Smith is the best coach in the state!

That's a pretty strong statement.

This makes sense and sheds some light. Hey if a coach is distracted from doing his job and cant give 110% then the kids and program suffers.

Not sure if this was the case but there is nothing tougher then teaching a full load at school and then having to go to practice.

Ironic that you'd say that.

Ironic that you'd say that.

Not ironic but simply the truth at a strong program like X.

Apparently Coach Wolford did the right thing by stepping down because he wasn’t able to give the program 110%. According to some on here he was distracted by other things that are apparently are more important than winning.

Some have also stated that he is a one of kind stand up guy off the field. Those are all great things that programs look for in a coach but unfortunately he wasn’t winning the right games therefore he wasn’t getting the job done.

You see Deuce, Programs like T,X and Highlands simply can’t settle for mediocrity so they move on until they find the right guy that will give the kids the very best opportunity and chance to win regardless of whether he is a great guy or not.

This is why these programs are the best...

What coaching credentials did he have when he was hired at St. X? Had he ever been a head coach? Assistant?

No clue, someone familiar with the program will have to answer

I would certainly like to think he had plenty of head coaching experience to take on a program of St X caliber...

No prior coaching experience, if my memory serves me. Definitely not HC.
