10th Region Recap and Rankings - 1/23/17

The region's top 5 seem to have separated themselves just a bit from the pack, and the gap between number one and number two may not be as significant as many - myself included - believe it was a couple of weeks ago. Without further ado:

 

1. Campbell County (18-1, 6-1 region). The Camels served up an Oreo last week, with a romp over Highlands the filling between a pair of nailbiters nd running their winning streak to 16. Cole Hegyi had 19 in a 62-60 win over Conner, then added another 19 to complement Garren Bertsch's 21 in the win over Highlands. In the much-anticipated matchup with 37th district foe Scott, Bertsch nailed the game-winner at the buzzer to continue the streak. While Campbell has looked very beatable, they're still the class of the 10th at press time. The win streak is in serious jeopardy this week as the Camels travel to Covington Catholic before hosting Montgomery County and Bourbon County.

 

2. Scott (13-6, 4-1 region). Scott's only action last week was the aforementioned loss to Campbell County. Jake Ohmer leads the squad in points and rebounds with 26.9 and 8.0, shooting 54% from the floor, 43% from three and 86% from the line. Bracken County and Grant County are on the schedule this week for the Eagles.

 

3. Paris (14-6, 9-1 region). Paris also had just a single game on last week's schedule as they dismantled Harrison County by 31 and are riding a 5-game win streak. The duo of Eric Johnson and Jekobi Wells continues to pace the Hounds in scoring and rebounds. Mason County is on the schedule on Tuesday, then off to represent the 10th in the All-A state tournament.

 

4. Clark County (14-8, 6-2 region). The Cardinals manhandled 40th district foe Bourbon County, fell by a bucket on the road to Rowan County, then bounced back with a 14-point win at Tates Creek. Will Philpot posted an impressive 20/20 in the win over Bourbon, while Philpot, Jordan Graham and Ryan Cooper scored double figures in the Tates Creek contest. Garrard County, Madison Southern and Montgomery County fill out this week's schedule.

 

5. Pendleton County (12-7, 4-2 region). The Wildcats started the week out on the wrong foot, dropping a 68-58 decision to Ryle and snapping a 6-game win streak in the process. Net time out however, sophomore sensation Dontaie Allen dropped 44 on Mason County in a 111-91 defensive struggle. The Wildcats went 13-26 from behind the arc in this one. St. Henry and Harrison County are up next for Coach Belcher's squad.

 

Here's where it gets dicier. Do we go with "body of work", or "what have you done for me lately"? Put the next several teams in a hat and you won't be far from wrong when you draw them out.

 

6. Bracken County (9-9, 7-4 region). Coach Hinson's Polar Bears eked out a 71-70 squeaker over Nicholas County before falling by 3 on the road to improving Harrison County. Bourbon and Bath are up first this week; then the Bears get the chance to stun region #2 Scott s they did region #1 Campbell a few weeks back.

 

7. Nicholas County (10-9, 6-6 region). The Jackets went 2-1 last week to reach the .500 mark on the season, winning home games against Robertson County and Danville while dropping the 1-pointer to Bracken. Frankfort and Augusta (should be a good one) are up this week.

 

8. Mason County (11-11, 4-4 region). The Royals are still battling the injury bug and struggling to stay at the .500 mark; surrendering 207 points in losses to Greenup County and Pendleton County before righting the ship in a 17-point win over 16th region neoghbor Lewis County. Leevi Dunaway poured in 41 in the loss to Pendleton and added 29 against Lewis County. Another trio of games the week for the injury-riddled Royals - Paris, Rowan County and Boyd County.

 

9. Montgomery County (6-14, 2-4 region). The Indians took 2 of 3 last week, defeating Augusta and Bourbon County while falling to Mercer County. Jerryd Jones has averaged 13 ppg since his return from injury. Things don't get any easier this week with tilts against Campbell County, Clark County and Breathitt County.

 

10. Bishop Brossart (7-13, 4-3 region). Mustangs prevailed in their only game last week, a 61-60 win on the road over Harrison County, with Bryce Kremer, Bryan Duffy and Zach Hamberg reaching double-digits in the win. Calvary Christian and Holy Cross are on tap this week.

 

The rest:

 

11. Harrison County (4-16, 2-9). Harrison dropped their first two last week before surprising Bracken County. Tough week this time around with Woodford County, Paris and Simon Kenton.

12. Augusta (9-9, 4-5). 4 in double figures in the win over Robertson County, Shoemaker with 27 and Laycock a career-high 19 in the win over Fleming County. St. Pat, Nicholas County and Silver Grove this week.

13. Bourbon County (7-13, 4-5). Colonels have dropped 5 straight and out of the top ten. Bracken, Campbell and Model this week.

14. Robertson County (8-8, 1-6). Black Devils lost all three tilts last week, and try to rebound against Menifee, Silver Grove and Beth Haven. I boldly predict that they will do so.

15. Calvary Christian (7-9, 2-4 region). Cougars snapped a 4-game skid last week, and host the Cougar Classic this weekend.

16. St. Patrick (6-14, 1-6). Saints dropped a pair last week, with three games slated this week.

17. Silver Grove (3-12, 0-3). 22-point win over Latin was last week's highlight.

 

Player of the week:

 

Cole Hegyi of Campbell County earns this week's honors, and scored his 1000th career point to boot.

Campbell County @ Covington Catholic, 1-23

Bracken County @ Scott, 1-27

Paris - state All-A

Clark County @ Montgomery County, 1-27

Clearly the seed/draw issue in the 39th is irrelevant as it pertains to even the weakest 10th Region in history. Currently appears to be a race to the bottom. It's a function of who's the "least worse" team at tournament time as to who wins the 39th this year. IMHO of course.

I think you're on target, and any of three teams could win the district.

Still think it's a two team race. St Pat and Augusta still miles behind Mason and Bracken.

 

Cannot argue a bit with your observation. But, even though their offense may be ugly, they are tenacious on defense. Got some players that give all they got every possession. Have stayed close to some decent teams with superior athletes with all-out effort. Kirk deserves consideration for 10th Region COY.

With the exception of Bracken over Camels in the Igloo eons ago, does anyone in the 39th have a quality win?
Harrison County, Beechwood, I think Nicholas would qualify. And yes, the win over Campbell County. Just because it happened over among ago doesn't make it less of a signature win.

They have a shot tonight at Bourbon County.
