April 18, 20179 yr A driving range is a driving range, but what's the best one in Louisville? I've got all day free and figured I'd go and hit some balls.
April 18, 20179 yr Shot a net 30 last night! On the money board!! The money usually gets dumped into the beer fund so it is a matter of pride!
April 18, 20179 yr Author Ok, for all those golfers out there shooting mid-low 80's and even touching down into the 70's the first time or two playing this spring after having a few months of not playing over the winter. Either I am the worst golfer in the world (I'm not great but I'm far from the worst, finished last year between 12-13), some of you have magic pixie dust stored away somewhere, or maybe there is a generous amount of "foot wedging" and "winter rules" playing going on. I can't figure it out I played my first full 18 this weekend (have walked 9 twice at my home course) and I quit keeping score half way through because I was just terrible. I'm not sure if I broke 100. Now, the wind was blowing pretty hard and affecting the ball quite a bit, and it wasn't on my favorite course either, but still it was a pretty sad round, even for it being this early and conditions being less than optimal. Now, I usually don't keep score this early and probably shouldn't have started on this round. I read some good advice a couple of years ago that you should get a few practice rounds under your belt after a long layoff before you start keeping score as you will probably only make yourself mad and you shouldn't expect to play that well anyway. Words to live by, unfortunately I didn't live by them.

I can't figure it out We've played together, so you know my game, but I can tell you that I always play better early in the year. Always. My bad habits are forgotten, the 6" between my ears have been lying dormant, and I just see ball, hit ball. Now, once I hit a few squirrelly shots, and start wondering why, that is when things go downhill quickly.
April 18, 20179 yr I golfed with @Oldercoach recently. Ever seen an almost scratch golfer hit a ball backwards?? I wish I had it on video it was a sight to behold!

April 18, 20179 yr Author We've played together, so you know my game, but I can tell you that I always play better early in the year. Always. My bad habits are forgotten, the 6" between my ears have been lying dormant, and I just see ball, hit ball. Now, once I hit a few squirrelly shots, and start wondering why, that is when things go downhill quickly. I know it's the exact opposite for me. I'm usually playing my very best golf late in the year, usually right around the time I have to put them up for basketball season. Usually early I'm pretty bad (maybe not quite as bad as I was Saturday), takes me a while to get loose and back in any sort of groove. At 51 now just can't roll out of bed and fire away, takes time to get these big old bones going. Want to hear the kicker though? I was killing it (for me) off the tee. That's the weakest part of my game and even when I'm playing well I'm usually nothing more than average with that part of my game. Now watch, as the rest of my game starts to come around I won't be able to hit it off the tee at all...never fails.
April 18, 20179 yr For those who watch Mike and Mike, Booger McFarland has been calling out some of the old legends (Nicklaus, Trevino, Player) on the show, saying he can beat them straight up. I think he carries a 16 handicap. Gary Player called in this morning and said that Booger's golf swing looks like a cow giving birth to a roll of barbed wire.
April 19, 20179 yr I golfed with @Oldercoach recently. Ever seen an almost scratch golfer hit a ball backwards?? I wish I had it on video it was a sight to behold! The part about the ball going backwards is 100% true. 1st round of year, second swing of season from middle of fairway...topped it....hit mud plug and backed up. Sweet beginning to the season.
April 19, 20179 yr Pi has no idea how much a flagstick weighs. Never picked one up in 18 holes. I woulda bet the house this post was coming. Hahaha. I'm just glad you also didn't mention the difference in our scores.... haha.
April 19, 20179 yr That's the one thing I never found in my year of living in Louisville. I used to go to Long Run's just because it was close to the house. There's one in Crestwood called the golden tee. But seems you have to be a member at a CC with a range where we are to have access to a good one. I like the one at Polo Fields the best.
April 19, 20179 yr Ordered my Mizuno irons 3 weeks ago today...... They still haven't came in. Looking to get a new set of irons maybe next year, what is it about Mizuno that you liked.
