June 13, 20179 yr I have my regular weekly league at Crescent Hill every Tuesday but I'm regrettably not getting to play much outside that. Looking forward to vacation later this month in Michigan. Hoping to play twice up there.
June 13, 20179 yr Played the weekend of June 3/4 in the 11th annual Sag Hollow Invitational. We had 65 golfers play in it. I played in the 2nd Flight (out of 6 flights) and finished 5th. Shot a 79-80 (159). Blew a good round on the second day when I was only 4 over with 4 holes left to play and double bogeyed two of them. Three putted one of them from 10 feet!!! I suppose I thought about my better than usual score and my Adam's Apple tightened up along with my hands. Trey Bowling of Manchester, and a former EKU star as well as Kentucky Open champion, won the Championship Flight for the second consecutive year. He was tied at -1 with Eric Mason (former WKU and two time Ky State Am champion) and Shawn Tipton ((former Morehead State and OVC individual champion) with 3 holes remaining and he birdied two of them while the other two didnt. He finished with a two day score of 72-69 (141). The championship flight plays from the tips and at Sag Hollow that's almost 7,000 yards. (the 2nd hole is a 480 yard Par 4 and two other Par 4's are close to that distance. It's definitely a challenge for those guys. One fellow I was impressed with was a first time participant at Sag Hollow's tournament. Izzy Grayson of Maysville won the 1st Flight with a score of 69-70 (-5). That flight played from the 6100 yard tees. He was as steady and straight as any golfer I've seen in a while. I think he said he's in his early 40's and plays a lot of the club tournaments in Kentucky. I think he plays at Irvine every July. He's definitely got the game for competition and says he will back for our tournament next year. And former Georgetown College basketball coach Happy Osborne and a friend made the long drive from Owensboro, where he now coaches Kentucky Wesleyan, to Booneville for the tournament. He raved about our course and said he will be back next year if possible. If anyone is interested in playing Sag Hollow we're located about 1 mile from Booneville in Owsley County on Route 11 south and then another mile up Sag Hollow Road to the course. Its 30 miles south of the Slade exit off the Mt Parkway, the exit you get off to go to Natural Bridge. From the south its 44 miles from London and 50 from Hazard. It's a 9 hole layout built on two levels approximately 100 feet from top level to bottom. Two Par 3's are how you get from the top to the bottom. One plays 150 from the tip and the other 220. There's an elevation drop of slightly over 100 feet down to the greens. Our greens are new, rebuilt by a Louisville company two years ago. If you enjoy mountain scenery and a nice golf course give it a try. $20 for an 18 hole round.
June 13, 20179 yr Good gosh, had to go to the 3rd page to find this thread. Is no one playing golf? I know I haven't played nearly as much at this point of the year compared to last. Hey @spindoc...we doing the SO golf scramble this year? I'll forward the info as soon as it's made available.
June 14, 20179 yr I played yesterday at Indian Creek in Mt. Sterling. First time I've played in two weeks. Shot a 79 (+8). I'm playing Saturday with my father-in-law at Griffin Gate. I haven't played my own ball there in years. It's usually a scramble when I play it. Next weekend I'll be making my yearly trip "back home" for the Joe Mooney Invitational at Cynthiana CC. Great event on a fun golf course.
June 14, 20179 yr Looking forward to vacation later this month in Michigan. Hoping to play twice up there. IMO Michigan is the best golf state in the country. Just such a wide variety of fantastic courses. Any idea which courses you are looking to play? I'll be up there in late July playing Arcadia Bluffs and Forest Dunes.
June 14, 20179 yr IMO Michigan is the best golf state in the country. Just such a wide variety of fantastic courses. Any idea which courses you are looking to play? I'll be up there in late July playing Arcadia Bluffs and Forest Dunes. We stay a little further north than that, up on the Eastern shore of Traverse Bay near where it opens into Lake Michigan. I'll be playing A-Ga-Ming, which is right along Torch Lake. Probably play it twice in my seven days up there.
June 18, 20179 yr Was given gift cards to get new clubs for Fathers Day. I have a set of Nike Ignite irons and a very old Titleist driver. Not sure what needs replacing more and what I should be looking for in replacements....Or should I go for a really nice putter? Any help from our regular golfers would be helpful....
June 19, 20179 yr The 82nd Annual Chippeways Invitational Match Play Tournament is this Friday - Sunday in Maysville, KY!! My favorite weekend of the year, bar none. Already looking forward to a hearty dinner at Mi Camino Real on Friday night, before euchre with the boys back at the Hampton Inn (before a few of the knuckleheads head down to the Pub to act a fool for a few hours). My expectations are exceedingly low from a golf-standpoint, but even if I get beat on Friday and Saturday, it will do nothing to damper my trip down. Hopefully I'll have a buddy or two to follow on Sunday if I'm eliminated. @mcpapa, hope to bump into you this weekend around Maysville.
June 19, 20179 yr I've played quite a bit this year already, mostly in the last 6 weeks or so. I still stink.
June 19, 20179 yr I've played a couple of times since my last post. Saturday at Griffin Gate and today (scramble) at Eagle Trace. I played the blue tees at GG (about 6300 yards) and shot 70 (-2) with a ball out of bounds. 14 greens in regulation helped. Probably should have shot 67-68. Today was the first time I had played Eagle Trace since they put in zoysia. They are awesome. They were soaking wet today, but man are they pure! I won't say what my team shot, because we never stood a chance against the winning team, which shot 50 (-22). Thursday I'll be playing my practice round at Cynthiana CC in preparation for the Joe Mooney Invitational.
June 20, 20179 yr I've not played much over the last several years and had planned on playing more this year. That has not happened considering I've played exactly 0 times.
June 20, 20179 yr I haven't played for a few weeks, but I dribbled the ball with my wedge a personal best, 17 times in the yard Sunday.
June 21, 20179 yr How can the same guy have 3 birdies and 4 double bogeys in the same round? I accomplished that feat at Legendary Run today...ugh...I have never broken 80 before while having 4 DB's...shot a 79 today though...

Depends on the amount of the gift cards and where they are too. If it is in the budget (not really sure what that is) then get fitted for the clubs. If not I can probably make a suggestion or too.
June 21, 20179 yr I was +1 with two holes to play tonight in our weekly 9 hole league play and messed up the last two holes and shot a 39. Bogeyed one of them from 60 yards when I came up short going into the green and then chipped it long. And the final hole I was 70 yards out and hit short again, tried to putt through too much apron and bogeyed. I'm the master of the game at shooting myself in the foot and screwing up a good round. Anyone that has played for 35 years, as I have, darn sure should be able to hit a green in regulation from 60 yards!!! And most of our greens seem half the size of a football field. :irked:
