Best high school football/basketball player ever in Kentucky

Featured Replies

Don Gullett - Mckell HS in Greenup Co. was a great one in his time in football and baseball, not sure about basketball.

:thumb: Glad this was posted. Gullett as all know picthed for the Reds (Big Red Machine days) and the Yankees before becoming the pitching coach for the Reds. I understand that he was also a heck of a basketball player along with football and obviously baseball.

Roni Robinson from Franklin Co. not Frankfort, but a great list.

6. Tim Couch (Leslie County High, Hyden, Ky.)

As a prep QB, Couch set all kinds of national high school records -- most pass completions (872), passing yardage (12,104), TD passes (133), and passing percentage for a season (75.1). Some of those have been broken in the pass-happy years since, but Couch was selected as the best high school QB of the last 20 years, and we agree.

So do others. "Couch is the best quarterback prospect I've seen in 17 years," Tom Lemming, a high school football guru, told SI in 1995. "Better than Jeff George, Ron Powlus and Peyton Manning. He reminds recruiters of John Elway."

Couch was no slouch as a hoopster, either. He scored 36 ppg as a junior, tops in the state, and was named Kentucky's Mr. Basketball.

Who else has ever been named Mr Football & Mr Basketball

Maybe Tom Lemming needs to find a different career. j/k!

Couch was a great high school quarterback but man he was a bust in the NFL

This is not accurate, Couch was not named Mr. Basketball in Kentucky. I believe he graduated in 1995 and Charles Thomas (Harlan) was named the KHSAA Mr. Basketball, not Couch....:thumb:

To my knowledge no one has ever been named Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball. If so, this thread would not be necessary.

He never won Mr. Basketball. Here's (part of) the list of Mr. Basketball winners:

1974 Jack Givens (Bryan Station)

1975 Dom Fucci (Tates Creek)

1976 Darrell Griffith (Male)

1977 Jeff Lamp (Ballard)

1978 Doug Schloemer (Holmes)

1979 Dirk Minniefield (Lafayette)

1980 Ervin Stepp (Phelps)

1981 Phil Cox (Cawood)

1982 Todd May (Virgie)

1983 Winston Bennett (Male)

1984 Steve Miller (Henry Clay)

1985 Tony Kimbro (Seneca)

1989 Allan Houston (Ballard)

1990 Dwayne Morton (Central)

1991 Jermaine Brown (Fairdale)

1992 Tick Rogers (Hart Co.)

1993 Jason Osborne (Male)

1994 Elton Scott (Marion Co.)

1995 Charles Thomas (Harlan)

1996 Daymeon Fishback (Greenwood)

1997 Brandon Davenport (Owensboro)

1998 J. R. VanHoose (Paintsville)

1999 Rick Jones (Scott Co.)

2000 Scott Hundley (Scott Co.)

2001 Josh Carrier (Bowling Green)

2002 Brandon Stockton (Glasgow)

2003 Ross Neltner (Highlands)

2004 Chris Lofton (Mason County)

2005 Dominic Tilford (Jeffersontown)

To my knowledge no one has ever been named Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball.
Derek Smith should have been.

You are right...My mistake

That is what they had on espn.com

Couch graduated in 96'. But the 95 b-ball season winner for Mr B-Ball was Charles Thomas from Harlan. 1996 winner was Daymeon Fishback from Greenwood.

My Order- By achievement after High School

4) Michael Bush- did you know he is number 5 in career receiving yards in the state? and played defense?

And Bush accumulated nearly all of those receiving yards by the end of his junior year (he started at QB the last two games of his junior year and his entire senior season).

No problem....:thumb:

Couch was an excellent HS player. I watched him doing his pregame warm-ups throwing before a game, he would throw the ball 50-60yds with his left hand, equally effective.

This is a "Best High Schooler" right?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Travis Atwell. He was Mr. Football and one of the best bball players in the state. He scored 50 points in a high school game. If he had played at Highlands, Trinity, or Male everyone would have him on their list.

Exactly what I was about to post.

I was going to mention the tops of West Kentucky over the past 7 or 8 years. I believe Atwell and Pulley would easily top the list.

1) Mike Bush, Male

2) Curtis Pulley, Hopkinsville

3) Derek Smith, Highlands
