Best high school football/basketball player ever in Kentucky

Featured Replies

He would not hold KHSAA football records if ANY of the following had occurred:

a) Brohm had started at T as a freshman

b) Couch's coach had sat him down when games were in hand

c) he had to play against bigger/better defenses

Apparently Brohm wasn't good enough to start for T as a Freshman, so how is that a knock on Couch. If he was thier best QB Trinity would have played him.

Not apparent at all. FYI, Tim wouldn't have started as QB as a freshman at Trinity either.:thumb:

1. Wallace "wah wah" Jones-- Harlan

2. Jermaine Brown-- Fairdale

3. Michael Bush-- Male

4. Tim Couch-- Leslie Co.

5. Brian Brohm-- Trinity

6. Derek Smith

Charles Thomas, Harlan High School. I can't remember exactly but played varsity basketball from his eigth grade year to his senior year. Was Mr. Basketball in 95' I believe. Played some college ball at the University of Minnessota.

Glad to see "Wah Wah" on there! Just for your information, (incase you already didn't know), he played in the Olympics on the basketball team, and was All-American at UK in Football, Basketball, and Baseball from what one of our teachers told us.:D

I knew he was all-sec in football. He was an all-american in basketball and played on the olympic team and in the nba drafted by Washington but played for the Indianapolis Olympians for several years. He was also an outstanding baseball player and played all three sports in college.

Believe it or not, we still have a photograph of his senior year when they won the State Title in basketball back in 1948-1949 (I believe those are the right dates). Oh, and to add somebody to the list, I would have to say Michael Jones-Harlan High School. The last time I saw the records, he still held the national record for assists.

Also, a recent player, I would say Stewart Miller from Middlesboro. Came very close to getting some kind of a record with 3-pointers made? However, he was an awesome athelte.

Brian Brohm is a good athlete, but the only reason he's being mentioned in this thread is because of how good of a QB he was in HS, and is for U of L. He was an above average basketball player, but by no means was he a star.

Mike Bush is #1 - of those I've seen personally.

Derek Smith is #2 - an argument could be made for him to be #1

Curtis Pulley, Jared Lorenzen, Lonnell "Worm" DeWalt, Tim Couch, Mario Urrutia (Fern Creek - '04) & Chris Lofton should also be mentioned.

What about Andre Woodson? Wasn't North Hardin a Sweet 16 team his senior year? I think they either won it all or lost in the finals...

Well, the thing about Michael Bush was his amazing versatility and overall athleticism in both sports. Which is why I think he is the best all around football player in KY history. Think about it for a second... this guy would have been in the top five in the state at about 7 positions... Wide receiver, Tight End, running back, QB, Cornerback, Safety, and any of the LB spots. That's truly amazing. I think he could go pro at almost any of those positions. He is a Heisman contender and ranked as a top 3 player at a position that he never even played in high school. Wow.

Though he wasn't as dominating in basketball, I would say he was probably a top five player in the state his senior year at 3 positions: 2, 3, or 4. So, it makes it a pretty easy for me. I put him first and Derek Smith second.

After watching Chris Lofton play catch with Cincy QB Grutza he was a better football player than basketball. Watching him at Rupp arena sinking the Cats some would beg to differ. Then throw in his buzzer beater to save UT in the NCAA tourny he has skills on the hardwood. Of recent times he is missed on most list.

Bath County had a couple of football players almost make the big show in the NFL. Frank Jones with Green Bay and Chris Swartz Arizona who is the son of Dan Swartz (UK & MSU) of Celtic fame and when he played for Bath County there wasn't a football program.

Donta Smith-Oldham County and Gerad Parker Lawrence Co get my vote as the top two underrated. Parker was one of the better basketball players to come out of Eastern KY and played football at UK plus holds about every WR record in the state. Donta turned down and offer to play football at Virginia Tech and got drafted by the Atlanta Hawks! What else can you ask for?

I watched Phil Simms and Chris Swartz play a game of who could hit the cross bar from the 50 yard line when I was in High School at the Phil Simms camp. Amazing!!

While I am a fan of Mike Bush and would probably vote for him, he was never the best QB in the state at any time. He played QB only towards the end of the playoffs his junior year losing to the best QB in the state that year in the finals 45-19. The next year he played QB about 90% of the time and still was out dueled by the best QB in the state that year in the final 59-56. A victim of bad timing I'm afraid.

Chirs Berry (South Laurel)

Played 4 year baseball and football at Morehead St. and 1 or 2 years of basketball. Three sports in college is not done as often now as back in the day.

Here are some names and perhaps others, can elaborate on their playing both sports:

Derek Homer

Mark Higgs

Vince Taylor

Sonny Collins

Brad Wilkerson

Gino Guidugli

Micah Johnson

Others may know, if they played or excelled in both sports.

Higgs and Wilkerson did not play basketball enough to mention, although I believe Wilkerson was the high school soccer play of the year for Kentucky...
