Best high school football/basketball player ever in Kentucky

Featured Replies

Gerad Parker at Lawrence Co has to be listed. He and Montrell Jones have almost every receiving record in the state and Gerad was number 2 (yards I think) in the history of the Nation. He went on and played at UK.

Basketball wise he was the best player to ever play at Lawrence Co averaging around 25 a game. He married one of the all time great girls basketball players in the state (Kandi Brown). Talk about a child that should have some good genes!

Where did she play?

Correct. Otherwise I would have mentioned Brian Brohm.

See post #13.

Here are some names and perhaps others, can elaborate on their playing both sports:

Derek Homer

Mark Higgs

Vince Taylor

Sonny Collins

Brad Wilkerson

Gino Guidugli

Micah Johnson

Others may know, if they played or excelled in both sports.

This may be a big time sleeper, and many of you may have never heard of this guy, but Keneal Jenkins from Madison Central the late 90's.

He was the best player on a 1998-99 team that featured future Wildcat Marquis Estill and at least 4 other players who went on to play college basketball. They were beat out by Scott County in the quarterfinals of the Sweet Sixteen that year.

As for football, Keneal only played his senior year and still amassed over 1000 yards recieving and was a leading reciever in the state in 98. Jenkins was invited to both the KY football and basketball allstars, but didn't play in either. I hate to say it but this guy turned out to be one of the biggest wastes of talent that I can remember.

As for the players mentioned, I think Derek Smith and Mike Bush are my top 2.

Keneal Jenkins from Madison Central was a freak of nature type of athlete that many people did not know about, but every college football recruiter knew who he was.

He was capable of doing things humanly impossible. His career ended before it ever began because of some poor decisions.

My personal choice... Brian Brohm. His football talent is given, but he was a pretty solid player on Trinity's first sweet sixteen team. He was the emotional heart and soul of that team. His refuse to lose attitude carried a talented but young team. He wasn't too shabby in baseball either.

Brian Brohm is a fabulous football player. To mention him in this thread as a combination football/basketball star is doing a huge injustice to some of these other deserving players mentioned.

That's a good one!

Joey Couch was a very good player on the D line during one of the brighter times in UK football. He was also a great highschool basketball player. That is no joke.

Don Gullett - Mckell HS in Greenup Co. was a great one in his time in football and baseball, not sure about basketball.

:thumb: Gullett was a three sport star at McKell. & is still the record holder for most points scored in a football game.

Derek Smith (HHS)

Tim Couch (Leslie Co.)

Michael Bush (Male)

Frank Jacobs (NCC) ???? I believe he was a pretty good basketball player from what I remember

Michael Bush would be the clear winner in the b-ball/football category.

I'm not sure its even a close call.

You've been blinded by your prejudice (CovCath-Highlands). Derek Smith won a big-time Hoops-Gridiron National Player of the year award, played at the Nike Camp, and was one the more highly recruited TE's in the country. While Bush is the winner, there's not that large of a descrepancy as you would think. Not to mention runner-up Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football.

Tim Couch hands down.

He would not hold KHSAA football records if ANY of the following had occurred:

a) Brohm had started at T as a freshman

b) Couch's coach had sat him down when games were in hand

c) he had to play against bigger/better defenses

For a two sport guy you would have to say Bush...Derek Smith (Highlands), Bernard Jackson (X), and Shaun Johnson (T) were also great in both sports. Johnson did not play basketball his senior year and it really hurt T.

Now that I think of it, Wah-Wah Jones may just belong at the top of this list! (And I wonder if King Kelly Coleman played football?)

After looking at all of these younger players listed is kind of making me feel old.:irked:
