Best high school football/basketball player ever in Kentucky

Featured Replies

Brian Brohm is a fabulous football player. To mention him in this thread as a combination football/basketball star is doing a huge injustice to some of these other deserving players mentioned.

I don't think it's any disrespect or injustice to anyone that he's mentioned in this thread. The Rocks have only been to the Sweet Sixteen once in 50+ years....and Brian was on that team.

Mentioning his name is no more of an injustice than mentioning any of the others' in this thread. They're all deserving of consideration, as is he.

You've been blinded by your prejudice (CovCath-Highlands). Derek Smith won a big-time Hoops-Gridiron National Player of the year award, played at the Nike Camp, and was one the more highly recruited TE's in the country. While Bush is the winner, there's not that large of a descrepancy as you would think. Not to mention runner-up Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football.

Please. Don't assume anything about a prejudice that simply does not exist.

Derek Smith would be #2 on my list. Outstanding on both the hardwood and the gridiron.

With that said, IMO Bush is the solid #1.

Smith and Lorenzen, were very good on the basketball court.

Bush is one of those rare athletes, who embody power, size and speed.

Where did Bush finish in Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball voting? I know Smith was runner up in both. If you look at it mathematically, Bush would have to have either won both or won 1 and was runner up in the other to oust Smith. Consensus seems to be centering on these 2.

JLo does not get enough respect for his ability as a high school b-baller. He could post you up with that large rear end or go outside and nail 3s.

The problem with your logic is assuming that all senior classes are even.

He was considerably less in size, girth wise in high school.
Curtis Pulley deserves a mention as well.

The top two are:

1. Mike Bush

2. Derek Smith

I agree, forgot about that one. Top 10 or so for sure.

Agreed. Just looking for some additional data points for this discussion. JLo was Mr. Football Derek's Senior Year. Who won Mr. Basketball that year?

P.S. Still looking for where Bush finished in both polls (and Tim Couch for that matter).

In my opinion, Brian Brohm's name does not need to be in this thread.....Best High School Football/Basketball Player Ever in Kentucky. Brian indeed qualifies under one of the criteria, but not the other. I saw him play in the Sweet Sixteen and can say without any reservation that he was a mediocre, high school basketball player at best.

Curtis Pulley deserves a mention as well.

Curtis Pulley is very deserving of recognition. Averaged something like 15 rebounds per game and a fair amount of points.

I also believe his senior year he was 2nd in the region in steals...For as big as he was he had very quick feet and hands...

Bush won Mr. Football and was runner up to Ross Neltner. Bush missed at least 9 basketball games his senior year due to injuries. He was a four year starter at Male and averaged over a double-double during his career.

Bush, in my opinion, is the clear choice.

Here are a few more for consideration:

Jermaine Brown-Fairdale: Mr. Basketball in Kentucky in 1991; First team all-state and football in 1989. Has anyone other than Chris Lofton ever garnered honors this high and both sports?

Lonnel DeWalt-Bowling Green: First-team all-state in football and in basketball.

Ron Thomas-Thomas Jefferson: played pro basketball for the ABA Kentucky Colonels from 1972-1976, third team all-state football in 1967.

Elmore Stephens-Thomas Jefferson: first-team all-state football player 1969; all-state basketball player.

JaJuan Spillman-Pleasure Ridge Park-second-team all-state or in football in 2004 and all-state in basketball.

Mike Campbell-Butler: first-team all-state in football in 1969; excellent basketball player.

Maurice Grinter-Fairdale: third team all-state football player in 2004; all-state basketball player. Currently playing at University of Kentucky.

Douglas Beaumont-Male: current candidate for Mr. Football, first-team all-state 2005; excellent basketball player.

Clint Bacon-Manual: first-team all-state football 1961; excellent basketball player.

Frank Maddox-Moore: first-team all-state football 1989; all-state basketball. This guy was one of my favorites-he could really play both sports at a very high-level and for some reason got very little publicity.

Donta Smith-Oldham County: first-team all-state football 2001; all-state basketball. Drafted by the NBA. Currently playing pro basketball.

Ron Gathright was a second-team all-state running back for Thomas Jefferson in 1965. Wasn't he also all-state in basketball? Ron Garrison was second-team all-state running back for Seneca in 1965. Wasn't he also an all-stater in basketball?

I believe that he won Mr. Football in 1998. Thus, he would've graduated in 1999. Mr. Basketball in 1999 was Rick Jones, Scott Co. By the way, JLo was the fourth consecutive Mr. Football to sign with Kentucky at that time.
