Best high school football/basketball player ever in Kentucky

Featured Replies

Gerad Parker at Lawrence Co has to be listed. He and Montrell Jones have almost every receiving record in the state and Gerad was number 2 (yards I think) in the history of the Nation. He went on and played at UK.

Basketball wise he was the best player to ever play at Lawrence Co averaging around 25 a game. He married one of the all time great girls basketball players in the state (Kandi Brown). Talk about a child that should have some good genes!

:thumb: :thumb: You are right stick. And just think, the kids will be dressed in Orange & Black!!!! We here in Ram Land sure hope so!!! Wasn't he also a track star and not to mention an All State performer in Chorus? Although I did catch his Garth imitation at UK.:D

After looking at all of these younger players listed is kind of making me feel old.:irked:

Not sure about you kick but I am old!! However I wouldn't have it any other way.

Brian Brohm is a fabulous football player. To mention him in this thread as a combination football/basketball star is doing a huge injustice to some of these other deserving players mentioned.

He was a starter and team leader for two years on some pretty good teams. One losing to Lofton and Mason County in double OT in Rupp. He was a pretty good basketball player for a kid that missed the first quarter of every season. No offense but Mike Bush was a great football player and a pretty good basketball player that played on some very good teams.

My personal choice... Brian Brohm. His football talent is given, but he was a pretty solid player on Trinity's first sweet sixteen team. He was the emotional heart and soul of that team. His refuse to lose attitude carried a talented but young team. He wasn't too shabby in baseball either.

Right on LSU. If Brian had never stepped foot on a football field, he was still an amazing athlete. He was better than most at basketball and baseball. Help me out here. Didn't Brian skip the Ky/Tenn all star game because the ROCKS were still playing in the state baseball tournament? And as you mentioned, he helped Trinity to the sweet sixteen and took Mason County to double or triple overtime before losing. I'd say that earns him the right to be mentioned in this thread.

Joey Couch was a very good player on the D line during one of the brighter times in UK football. He was also a great highschool basketball player. That is no joke.

I am sorry I didn't effectively communicate.....I agree that Joey Couch was an outstanding football/basketball player at Paintsville. Very effective on the hardwood.

Seriously, I've heard Wah-Wah Jones was a phenomenal football player as well. I just doubt that there are any BGPers who ever saw him play!

What about Keenan Burton @ Louisville Manual.

Burton was a much better football player than basketball player. He's not nearly as talented as Mike Bush or Derek Smith on the hardwood.

Is it fair to assume, most players mentioned on the list missed the first quarter of every basketball season?

He would not hold KHSAA football records if ANY of the following had occurred:

a) Brohm had started at T as a freshman

b) Couch's coach had sat him down when games were in hand

c) he had to play against bigger/better defenses

For a two sport guy you would have to say Bush...Derek Smith (Highlands), Bernard Jackson (X), and Shaun Johnson (T) were also great in both sports. Johnson did not play basketball his senior year and it really hurt T.

Now that I think of it, Wah-Wah Jones may just belong at the top of this list! (And I wonder if King Kelly Coleman played football?)

A) Didn't happen so we will never know but it would have been very interesting!

B) Possibly very true

C) Considering that he didn't have bigger/better teammates, if you give him those, then this is a wash.

As far as records, then with your logic, Couch would have only held the records until Brohm graduated. Then Brohm would have broken Couch's national records (or House's records - WV - who broke some of Couch's). Also, I know for a fact that House's coach ran up his numbers as best he could, even in blowouts. He was on record as saying that he would beat a team 100-0 if he could to get him the records. I personally witnessed his coach fake taking a knee against an opponent when he had a big lead at the end of a game to launch another TD pass to get closer to the records. Many record holders had this happen but the fact is that they did complete those passes for those yards and TD's.

For this thread, there are many to consider. Couch is one as Mr Football and leading scorer in the state in hoops his junior season, Derek Smith from Highlands is another, Dewalt is another, Michael Bush another, etc. A lot to choose from and I don't know if I could pick just one.

Evidently you don't know Coach Joe Beder, He never played Tim when game was in hand....Leslie was in Knott Central's district so I got to see Leslie play several times...Leslie played Knott 4 times in the Couch era 27-22,55-6 (Tim didn't play 2nd half, 24-6 (2 late tds in a game palyed on friday Night and Saturday afternoon due to power failure) and 32-8 (Tied at 8 at Halftime). Tim didn't really get to sit as much as you would have thought Coach Beder is doing the same with Bobby Owens ...when he feels the game is in hand Bobby comes out.Check the facts before you post next time.

Nice post! Couch also came out against North Laurel during his run when Leslie had a big lead. They had the lead because of Couch, but I had forgotten about this.

I'd take Smith over Bush on the hardwood but I think Bush would get the slight nod on the gridiron.

Curtis Pulley deserves a mention as well.

The top two are:

1. Mike Bush

2. Derek Smith

Brian was playing football in December for four straight years. Can any of the others say that. Yes, Brian dressed as a freshman during the playoffs and final while never playing.

Who is the best high school football/basketball player ever to play in Kentucky high school? I have a starter list below as food for thought.

Derek Smith-Fort Thomas Highlands

Michael Bush-Male

Chris West-Manual

Jerome Perry-Manual

Roni Robinson-Frankfort

Tim Couch-Leslie County

Any others?

Sorry guys. You are forgetting a pretty fair player from Louisville Flaget and Kentucky's only Heisman Trophy winner (I think). A guy named Paul Hornung. You did say "ever" not just since 1965 or something like that.
